TINUI.
I'FROH Oim OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Since'writing to you last.week, we have been refreshed with- the' long expected and much wished for, rain. Tho weathor changed on Saturday last, and camo up from the south, with " drizzling showers, and still continues. The gentle rain has done an immense amount of -good in tho district, and-j the ground is fast assuming its' wonted appearance. I am afraid, however, it lias come rather too Me to do any amount of good, frost ais having made its appearance on Sunday night. . - I regret to have to report a fatal accident, which happono;! to a man named John.Roach on Tuesday last. He was thrown from his horse at Whakataki, and sustained very severe internal injuries. Dj Milne who happened to be in the district at the time, was speedily in attendance, and did everything in his power to alleviate the unfortunate man's sufferings, and remained with him all Tuesday night. Dr Beard was also sent for, but" arrived after the sufforer had breathed his last. The deceased was subsequently interred in the Castlepoint cemetery. In my report of the distribution of prizes, I omitted to mention that tho silver watch which was presented by our late postmaster to tho most advanced boy in the school,' was awarded to Norman Owen.. This caused a small amount of heart burning, I believe, but under the condb ditions with which the prize given, the committee had no option but to award it to the presoht holder. Had it been for the boy who passed the be3t examination, there seems to bepittle doubt but that tho wateh would have found a different owner.
Tho annual meeting of the Sobool Committee was held last evening at tho schoolhouse, when it was stated that the result obtained at. the last examination was that 74 per] cent of the children passed, and. 26 . per cent failed. This is the lowest perceutago that has been obtained for two or three years, and I trust that an effort will be made during the coming year to bring back the school to that state of efficiency from which it seemß to have boon departing of late years. A meeting of householders was held afterwards to elect the Committee for tho present year. lam glad to see that greater interest was taken in tho election this year than formerly, about 20 being present. Messrs Bellias, Stilborn, Armer, Deans, McCulla®, Savage, Jepson, Collerton and Pon^ ofterod themselves for election, with tho result that the first seven named gentlemen were elected. This infuses a lot of fresh blood into the Committee, five being new members.
