Of these, 13 and 14 are otill ou the hands of the contractors, who have yet' a short period of their month's maintenance to perform, Tho greatest. praise is due; to Messrs Stevens' arid Gardiuor, for the systematic manner and energy with which the respective contracts have been carried through, The character 'of the works throughout is satisfactory, and will raise the toad to the position of one of the best within the County. ' Tlie works at present in course- •of ■ execution for further security pf. thejoad against the heavy landslips which have hitherto annually closed it against wheel traffic during the winter months, will be finished in the course of a few days. I have to suggest for the favorable consideration of the Council, that an additional man be employed throughout the winter, in order that proper attention may he given to the raking in, and a general preservation of tho freshly laid metal surface. Cashpoint .Riding, Masterton to Waimata Road.—Contracts No. 22 and 23 have been finished, and the former taken over from the contractor. Contract No, 24' is making indifferent progress, due in a large' measure to tie want of system in the manner of carrying on the works. With a continuance of favorable weather it may probably Be'completed in a fortnight's time. Contract No'. 25 is making good headway. A large staff of men aro engaged in its execution, and the works give every promiso of being out of hand at an early date. Contract No. 28 for protecting the Tinui river banks was completed on tho 15lk of last mouth, and having been urniutaincd by tiro contractor for the specified term, has been taken over, by ine on behalf of the Council. Contract No. 27 was finished and passed (subject to certain' alterations in the work) ou the. 26th of March. The contractor will uot,. however, be relased from the responsibility of its maintenance until tho 20th of the current month. A private contract. kas been entered" into with Mr J.. Mulligan for breaking sufficient Btono.to repair a short loDglh of the Mang'apakeha road. This work will be finished by the end of tb» 'present week.

The surface repairs between. Tinui and Whnkataki have'beoh Bnisbed, and the men are now engaged in crowning "up and repairing the formation on tho, Tinui to Manawa'section of tho Eketahuua lo Tinui Road, Men'have been seut up the coast, and are noweugaged in llie perforjiiHiice of certain works necessary to the belter drainage of the road across the Oahouga flats. The fascine groin work in the Mungapakeha creejc has been completed and willows planted along tho base of tho dip at the water's edge. These works will probably protect tho line from further interruption during tho win tor, Eketahuna to Tinui Road,—Contract No. 1 6 has made but poor headway during the past month, and at the present rale of progress cannet be completed before the bad weather may be expected to set iii, I. have decided, therefore, should matters have assumed no-wore-, favorablo aspect- by next visit to render the contractor assistance with mon and carts to expediate the performance of tho work, ■ ' Alfredton Hiding-Eketahuna to Tinui Road,—The permanent man for this line has been temporarily disabled through an accident by which one of bis arms were broken while engaged in the removal of a tree which had fallon across and .obstructed the road, Temporary arrangements have been made for the performance of any urgent work which may be required until he is sufficiently recovered to resume his duties. The measurement of bush felled by Mr Burling upon tho Tirau-, moa section of tho lino amounts to one acre. I have therefore to recommend that payment bo made to him for this at the rate authorised by the Council. Opaki to Manawafcu Road.—Thesurfaco men are employed throughout the line, in getting'the. fresh .material worked into the road surface preparatory to winter traffic, At the Maurice■ville road division, the rae.tal has been laid down, and is now being broken along the ruts. The crib work', which has been let 10-.Mossrs Blane and MoKenzie, has been takeu in hand, and will. be completed shortly. The Government aro now engaged in road, repairs between Mangamahoo and Mauriceville railway stations, and I am advised that the delivery of the balance of the grovel prom feed by tbe Government, towards repairs further north, will be commenced to-day. ■ On tho Woodrille to.
