FOOTBALL SPORTS.
The athletic sports in connection with the Masterton Football Club came off •on the Club's 1 ground, Worksop road yesterday, (Monday), and was attended by about four hundred persons, The attraction of a football match in an adjoining paddock, proved too'much for the footballers, who left the sports ground, to witness the contest. From a racing, football, an 1 financial point ■the -sports-were a success; but to the non-enthusiasts' in the game (ladies included) things were rather slow. The ground was-rather hard and rough in places, but the racing was good, and good finishes made. Mr Pearson's private band-was present during the afternoon, and enlivened the proceediugs. by nicely played selections. "Mr J. Muir officiated'as starter,' Messrs' Whatman,. C. Beard, 11, Udy (terfcuysj and G,. Day .were judges, and J. Williams,/J, Ross; J'. -Dixoh'ajid S. Wickerson were the.ground.committee, ■ and the duties of the secretaryship devolved upon Mr W. Udy (Greytown) 2 4 entries, Perry made threo splendid kicks, placing two goals to his credit, his furthest drop being 51 yards, over the bar. Udy made two good drops, but his third kick shot off in an opposite direction putting him out of the contest.

Udy (12 yds) came in first but a protest was entered owing to liirn running inside, a flag, which the Committee upheld. Tully (i2 yds) was leading into the straight, when ho fell over a dog, giving Harris and Thompson a clear run home, \vlieu to the surprise of everyone, Udy came through like a shot and breasted the tape about a yard and half to tho good. • Hurdle Handicap, 220 yards; .R, Thompson (scr.) ... 1 • John Harris (6 yds)- 2 E; Udy (7 yds) ; -8. Six ran.
