The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, APRIL 11, 1887. RAILWAY TIME TABLES.
Tm ingQntiity with which ilie railwayauthorities 'arrarige ■' ilie ti#6:ti{>fe for" public: holidays would; be worthy •of; .oommendation'- tee :'.>it not;, .thjit. appears 'to., be calculated fe' serve the publio RS.;.littlo as possibles If we take tliti arrangements for ;the Easter holidays wo fiud'-?tbat.'the traitf was an hour later than usual in leaving Wellington, thus shortening the time allowed to at tlieir destin'ations;by that tnu'ch. The'possible plea that the ordinary time of • departure was too early cannot; hold good, for what is too early in Wellington Would also bo too early in Masterton, where the usual time was closely adhered to, Then, the time allowed at Mauricevilje and Mangamahoe was altogether too short. Had an early train been laid on from Featherston to the present terminus, and reasonable excursion rates charged, large numbers of picnic parties and sportsmen would have availed themselves of it. As it was, the time allowed by the one train tl?at did go . that far. was ten minutes. Holiday seekers therefore had toresort to tlie old means of locomotion, and patronise livery stables. All the department has succeeded in doing haa been the reduction of the receipts from this portion of the line to the' lowe9t possible limit, for very few people carod to pay .the high rato charged for a run to Mungamahoe and back, with no I time allowed there. ■We also notice that the oarly down train to-morrow leaves at 5.55 a,m„ for the convenience of Wellington businoss men who have to return to their -desks that day. That a similar arrangement with regard to the up train might have provod a boon to residents in the Wairarapa is a matter that apparently ■never oocurred to the management.
Letters of naturalisation have' boen iesuod to John Ni'elson, blacksmith, Glareville, ■■ Messrs William.Boy, Ditmol Cameron, ■jun., Thomas Porritt, H. T. Sprutt, and Hart Udy are appointed a licensing committee for the Borough of Groytown. ' . The ordinary..monthly meeting of the North Wairarapa County Council takes place to-morrow. Mr F. W. We remind our readers.of the sports to be hold tins afternoon on the Mastevton Football Glub ground j'Worksop road. The regular monthly vraoetiricf of the Thistlo Lodge, S.O. will; be held in tho Masterton Masonic Hall on Wednesday evoning next. . ■' The second of tho " Winter Seoia's" organised by the leaseo and held in tho Theatre Royal, came off on Thursday evening, and was well patronised." Witn gnod music, capital floor, and first class arrangements,' the visitors spent a very enjoyable time. On Saturday evening six stacks of straw were destroyed'by fire <>n tho Op iki near the residence of tile Messrs Welch JSros. Five »f th«in had beun recently purchased by Mr B. .Smith for clntf cutting purposes, and were uninsured Tho e «aa over »nn hu.idred tmis burned, and Mr Smith's loss is consi 'embly over £IOO. Tho fire is suppled to have originated through tlu uverh wtinsr of the straw, but this in the face of the present dry weather cannot bj suitiiiiin'l, and is more like y to be an act of mcendainsin. The rinkmg season wa3 opened with great success in tho llastertmi Theatre Royal on Siturd;iy overling, the spacious fluor presenting a very animated appearmice when tho merry and graceful skaters were in full swing, Amone the visitors we noticed several Indies in tho Dress Circle, who seenu'd to enjoy the vagaries of several rink enthusiasts. The ut argument announce that the Theatre will W opened this evening for this favorite pwiuie, '
