Messrs'Herberfc and Fitzgerald's, Croat London Circus oponcd in Masterton laßt evening in the paddock at tnc rear, of the Empire Hotel, and received a fair share of public patronage The spacious marquee tont was fitted in a comfortable manner, and lighted by numerous kerosine lamps, which enabled tlio whole of tho performance to be seen to perfection. Tho principal feature of the show, was the admirablomannerin which theßronco horses went through their manoeuvres at a word of command from Mr Organ, who, by the way, wo remeinhor to have seen manipulating the eight beautiful stallions in Cole's circus a few years ago. We go to a circus to see performing horses, to see them jump, pick up articles of wearing apparel, fireoffguns, &c, but we mustcertainlysay that wethouglitit hardly possiblefor horses to wheel into line, form fours, threes anil twos, march in line, in fact, go through military drill in a manner that would even do credit to such a crack
corps as tlie Masterton Rifles, But Mr Organ makes them do all this, and more, for they waltz to time, singly and in pairs, play " see saw' 1 ala schoolboy, jump ovor each others backs, roll,; turn, over, aud all at a word. There is none of that
slashing about of tho whip on tho backs ot tho animals that is, usually soon at performances oftlii' kind, tho audience is spared all this. The pony " Coiinnodoro" is even nioro interesting than the Bronco horses,. and' if anything moro higldy trained, He is a curious little chap, and sooms to have a keen senso of fun, as far
as outward appearances go. There was the usual riding, barebacked and otherwise, feats of horsemanship, singly and double, and some clever handling of fivo horses by a daring rider, who allowed them to'toar away in single file, and then brought abreast during their mad career. A clever barrel balancing feat, horizontal bar balancing, conjuring, jugglery, and contortionists feats help to make up a good evening's ontortainnicnt,. The clowns antics were limited, it is usual to hoar his merry laugh and .patter throughout a circus performance, but last evening tliis rulo was doparted from',' and' after ftljoufc a quarter of an hour's fun tho gamo 'appeared to bo played out, and wo saw lio moro of him, and during tho whole of tlie. second part did not oven enter tho ring? Perhaps lady performers and clowns are necessary adjuncts, if so his presence last evening was excusable, for this was the first time wo remember seeing a circus without the ring being graced by a lady rider, and her feet being chalked by tho clown. An afternoon performance takes place to-day, at which all children will bo admitted for sixpence each, and to-night the company appear for the last timo. They are strongest and best company yet seen in tho Wairarapa, • and well worth a visit.
