NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.
Usited Press Association. March 4. .. - The .heavy..wiodjaat. eigbt .played I sad havoc in the [camp. About' 10 o'clock a strong southerly' breeze sprung up,andincreasing inatrenglhs'oohlevelled the stalls in which fruit and cakes were sold. Continuingits course it levelled the - Council tent, upset the' telegraph office", and blew down the barber's tout, the shooting galleries, and some halt a dozen tents occupied by competitor?. Fortunately no serious damage was done, and things were put right this morning. This morning it is still blowing bard, and in consequence of the large targets used at the long ranges being unable to stand the pressure, the last range of the Christchurch match and the 300 yards range of the Wanganui match for rifles ate now going on. This morning at' No. 18' target, 300 yards range, seven empty ; cartridge cases of 1884 ammunition were found on the moarid, showing dearly that some competitor, contrary to regulations, is using other.ammunition than 'that issued by the Association. It iB known.that a. good soore was made, there by a competitor, which is double the average scores of the others, but the Association havo no clue to the offender. 'Should he be discovered he will bo expelled. Precautions are being taken to prevent a-repitition of the offence, and the- bags of competitors aro being searched. The tint result of the election of a Temperance Licensing Committee for lleathcoto is that they threaten to refuse the renewal of the license for the camp canteen, which expires to-day. The' Government were asked to declare the camp a military camp, when no license would be required, but they refused to interfere. Probably satisfactory arrangements will be made today. The discovery of 1881 ammunition has created,a deal of excitement, and several tents have been searched- but nothing found. Several rounds of 1834 have been picked up on the range, and the officers are doing everything in their power to detect the cuiprit. The tents of Moosemau (Wanganui), Richardson (Dnnedin), Earp (Wellington), and Winter (Riverton), who" had occupied the mounds were the ammunition was found,' were searched, but nothing but Kynock was ■ discovered.
