PAHIATUA.

[From Paiiiatua Star,]

Accounts of bush burning generally are very satisfactory. A selector in the Masterton - Mangahoe Block in describing the burns in that direction says—" Ballance is completely burned up j stumps only remaining." The successful burns.will no doubt be the means of considerably increasing our population, and'within the next few months we expect to hear of- a lar»e number having settled down on their holdings. There are a few others yet to burn in the district, and we hope they will be as successful as those already burned.

Mr Knorpp, Inspecting Engineer, arrived in Pabiatna last Wednesday evening, to make enquiries in connection with the railway route. He was interviewed by a number of jettleVß yesterday morning, who endeavored to, point out the claims of this portion of the district, Mr Knorpp read a report furnished by Mr Holmes show-, ing the impracticability of bringing the line into Pahiatua, but wo reserve our remarks on the matter till pent issue, as information js required which is not to hand at present, Suffice it to say that the report is untruthful, and bears the impression of being written to order rather than the result of personal investigation. We very much regret to learn that Mr H. E. Heaney, Government Engineor, who has been stationed at Pahiatna for a considerable time, is about' to remove to Mauricevilk This changfe is only temporary, we believe, but Mr Reaney is a gentleman who will be greatly missed, if only for a few weeks There is no reason to fear that our Parliamentary Union, which will, no doubt shortly assemble, the genial leader of the opposition will not be found in his accustomed place, and we do not know of another gentleman on that side of the House tjiat could so sjjccess'fnl'ly •fjlj .that important office. The Pahiatua Geographical Society

is evidently finding favor,''as tho' Seoyetary informs us that a most kindly interest is being taken. Mr-Wakemaa urges an immediate special trip by pre-, arrangement to Fitzherberfc j this would require a special .meeting to arrange for camping out. Another gentleman volunteers to act as guide to Borne caves where the whole meaning and mystery of the name bj revealed. '"" ';-;.:.•■
