CRICKET.
A host interesting and.exoiting match was played on Saturday afternoon be-! tween teams representing ; the town 'and country cricketers, Owing to the bossterous weather wickets were not pitched till 1 o'clock, when the countrymen took the defensive, and ran up the decent score of 118, Stokes playing! a determined and slashing innings of 'B7, being backed up by Drew 17, and Willinms not out 18. The Townies j went in with plenty of, confidence to .wipe off this score, and although their "first four wickets fell for alow average they went at it pluckily, and the score stood at 8 wickets for 108 runs when Mackay was bowled by Elder. D'Arcy went in to knock off the required 6 runs, but after running one for Eobison and snicking Chapman for one, he was■ cleaned bowled. Symonds took the vacant wicket, the hearts of the Townies beating high with hope and anxiety. Elder sent one down to Eobison,'which almost proved fatal as it went into Kebbell's hands at point, but was dropped. JRobison managed to get Elder's next ball, away to leg, and although it was no more than a two hit, the batsman ran a desperate race arid scored three, bringing'the game'to a tie.' Symonds safely negotiated Elder's third ball, but the fourth scattered the timber, and the game was thus left in an unsatisfactory state. There was nothing particularly brilliant
about the play, unless wo menton the' fielding of the Country team which was the best we have seen on the Oval this season, The town team were rather lazy in this respect, and should have saved lots of runs, The matting pitch played very true, snd enabled tho batsmen to make a decent defence.
