SERIOUS FIRE AT LAMBTON QUAY, WELLINGTON.

ESTIMATED DAMAGE, £SOOO. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION,) Shortly after 8 o'clock this morning a fire broke out on the premises of Mr P. H. Arowgmith, fruiterer, of Lamb-ton-Quay, Wellington, opposite the New Zealand Times Office, at the time mentioned, Constable Gleeson 1 discovered smoke issuing from above the shop-door, and a closer inspection showed thapla.cq to |be .on fire. also caught fire. Strong efforts were made to prevent the fire extending to Mr Scott's fancy goods shop on the northern side of Arrowsmith's, and were partially successful, but considerable damage' was done by water. Arrowsmith's and Lindsay's shops were completely destroyed, while Mr Scott.s premises were gutted. The origin of the fire is unknown.
