WAIRARAPA NORTH COUNTY.

Resolved that the application he granted, on receipt of official request from the Board. From Mr \y. Jessen, Chairman of the MauricevilJe Road Board, asking for the services uf the pqunty Engineer for seyerai proposed works. Apr plication was granted. The-question

Prom the Bruce County Council, •asking-Go'operatioo.of: the ;Coiin<jil .ia supporting an amendment of the Act, that each County Council supports its own- poor. From the Minister of Justice in reply to the Council, asking the Council who they wished to appoint as Licensing Clerks in the Alfredton and Castle-, point district. Messrs ; W, Baylies and McHiilchon were nominated by the Council,and it was recommended that the Clerks of the respectivo Boards be ex officio Licensing Clerks. From the Upper Taneru Board in provision of the Act 1886, asking that OerUin properties in their district be annexed to the Masterton Road Board, It was resolved that the proper notice be given as required by the Act. From Public, Work# Department notifying that there was no funds available for' the Manawatu Gorge Road.

•From Chief Engineer Pubiic Works' Office ra the same road,'stating that the tbols and cottage-were ready to be handed over to the County. ■;From Public Works Department with returns of amounts raised at the Manawatu Bridge Perry for a period of live years, showing a surplus of £454 above expenses in collecting. From.Joseph Barratt and Fans Olsen, the former havingbeenemployed seven years the latter fourteen years ori the Gorge Road,: asking that the Council will'relain their services, . When tho Bruce County Council's letter was read the dfscussion that followed appeared to indicate that the Bruce County Council wanted the whole question of administering -the Charitable aid and management of hospitals to be . undertaken by the Council. The Councillors could not exictly fall in with tho idea of forming themselves into poor law. guardians, and decided that the Clerk be instructed to'write to., the. Bruce County Council informing them " that while this Council fully concurs in the views of the Bruce County Council that the grouping of Counties for - the purposes of Hospital and Charitable Aid is extremely unsatisfactory .this Council is not prepared as at'present advised to seek to be constitute! the actual administrators of Poor, and Hospital funds. ... ':, From. discussion or this subject it transpired that tiie Coun^il hud: written to'the'Waipawa County 'but' received .no reply, and that the 'Government were collecting the tolls from the road, and were expecting at the same 'time the North Wairarapa t Council to ke?p the road in repair. , It was tesolved on the motion of Cr McCardle, seconded by Cr Smith, that the Government be written to applying for the toll gate, and all tolls collected, since January 1, at the same time to notify that this Council is prepared to make an adjustment with the VYaipawa County and. the Manawatu Road Board; also that the Council cannot undertake the repairing of the road or payment of the roadmen unless this be done.

Or Beetham .pointed out the absurdity ol the Gorge road being in this County, for after travellers, come over the Gorge they have 'to travel .eight niiles before they enter upon t North County.road,. | j The Chairman said he quite agreed with what Cr ; Beetlmm said,- but the road was forced upon; the County, and as the. only, body interested had not troubled themselves to answer the communications of the County, it' was evident that they had 110 nicernative. He tjiouglif that it would be an act ot courtesy to the Waipawa County to .'send them a copy of the application seot to the Government, • , The Clerk whs instructed to inform the men.applying to be kept on the roads, that - the Council is at present iiu communication with the Government and that a definite answer could not'lib given them at present.
