Russia and Germany, whereby the former engages not to intervene in the event of a FrancoGerman war, the latter engaging not to take part in an Austro-Russian conflict, is contradicted, Sydney, January 6. Sailed—Manapouri, this afternoon. : Newman, one of the prisoners sen-" j tenceel to death for the Mount Rennie I outrage, has been reprieved in consequence .of- an explanatory letter mitten by Duffy, who is among those sentenced to death. Hill has also been reprieved, and both he and Newman have been committed to imprisonment in irons for life. The other four, Duffy, Boyce, Martin, and Read, will be executed'to-morrow morning. London, January 5. Rear-Admiral Henry Fairfax, C.8., has beon appointed to succeed RearAdmiral Tryon in the command of the Australian naval station.
