EXTRAORDINARY MEETING.
MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
OLIVER CROMWELL REMOVES ' THE MACE,
A Special meeting of. the Masfcerton Borough Council was held last evening." Present—Messrs Gapper (in tho chair) Perry, Parsons, Chamberlain, Eikins, Cullen and Muir. Tho Councillor in the chair com■nencod the proceedings by moving a vote of sympathy with the Mayor on his recent loss by tho destruction of his home, He also apoligised for his {or bis absence tbat evening. Tho motion was seconded by Cr Parsons and carried unanimously.
Tne Chairman then moved that tho Council go into Committee to consider the question of the division of the Borough into wards.
Cr Parsons seconded the motion,
The motion was carried. Ayes: Ors Gapper, Perry, Parsons, Chamber lain, and Eikins. Noes: Crs Cullen and Muir.
The Chairman then requested the representatives of tho press to withdraw,
Mr Hogg protested that this was the first occasion on which he had been asked to retire from a meeting of this kind.
After the representatives of tbe press had retired, the Chairman requested Mr A. W. Renall, who occupied a seat in the portion of the chamber alloted to the public-, to withdraw., Mr Rena.ll, we understand, refused to withdraw, and challenged the Chairman to get the police to turn him out.
After an an'vy altercation of a quarter of an hour between the Council and Mr Renall, the chairman left tho chair, and the Council broke up in disorder. Outside the Council Chamber another quarter of an hour was spent in angry disputation by Messrs Gapper and Renall, Mr Renall contended that the timo of the Borough Council bad expired with the Gazette notice, and that Mr Gapper and his colleagues were no longer councillors.
Or Muir then intervened., and after a few words, Mr Renall accompanied him down the street, declaring that he was a match for the whole Council. The Councillors then returned to the Chamber and held a meeting in Committee.
On going into Committee, Cr Cullen was voted to the chair, and a resolution was carried unanimously to petition the Governor to inquire into the previous petition, and to annul the proclamation for the division of the Borough till the inquiry had been held in conformity with the Act. Tho returning officer was instructed to take no action for an election under tho Ward division until the Council received a reply to its petition to the Governor, ■.
