CASE OF DROWNING AT NAPIER.
(UKIIRD PEESS ASSOCIATION.) Napier, December 11, Charles R. Cleveland, first mate of the ship Piako, was drowned this morning. The'ship was lying out iu the roadstead, and a boat had just been sent aw»y to another vessel, when Cleveland's cap blew overboard. Tellinp a boy to throw him a line, he jumped into the sea. The line was thrown to him but failed to reach him j then a life-buoy was thrown, andjhe life-boat was instantly lowered, Deceased sank soon after striking tho water, dnd being a .splendid swimmer, it is thought he must have either been seized with oramp or by a shark, Cleveland was 29 yoars of age and Berved his apprenticeship in the New Zealand, Company.
