CRICKET.

Pihautea v East Rdamahasga.

The above matoh came off at Pihautea last Saturday, and w,ib looked forward to with great interest on account or ita having become quite an annual event, not only by the promoterstho Messrs Bidwill Bros of the Pihautea team and Mr Coleman Phillips of East Ruamnhanga, but by each individual member of the team, that took part in trying to obtain the laurels for their respective teams; but on this occasion there.was, perhaps, if that, were possible, more interest taken in' itthan usual owing doubtless'in a greatmeasuro that the teams wcro considered to be well matched, As per mutual arrangement tho Captain of the Pihautea team had to select his team from'cricketers on the Pihautea estate, while on tile; other hand the oaptain of the East Ruamnhanga team had the privilege ,of selecting from a.largo district east of the Ruamihanga, and when it: was known that the East Ruamahailga team 'had amongst its members such Cricketers as Stokes, Reed,' Maunsell, Hume, Ramiden and MoMaafceva, it was generally considered that Pihautea had. at last met a 'foe worthy of its steel. About ,10 o'clock, the toss having been, won by Mr Phillips, captain of the flaat Ruamahanga team, they elected to go to the wickets to the bowling of W. and 0. Bidwill. As will be seon by the scores, the runs did not come fast, no special feature ocourred and tho innings dosed for 58.runs. The Pihautea team followed and after playing for Rbout thirty minutes, the team fcud visitor* adjourned to tho residence of Mr o..BLßidwill where an excellent dinner was laid out, and full justice was d me to the good thinw' provided. After dinner Mr W. E. iftidwill, in a neat speech, proposed the health of the visltiiirteam; coupled with the name of Mr 0 Phillips, and that gentleman having suitably responded toasted tho Pihautea' team, coupled with the name of the oaptain, Mr W. B. Bidwill,-Mr Bidwill replied,: and said said he felt proud of the team of which he was oaptain, and' Although' the visiting team was a strong one,: ns felt very sanguine that his team would do their beat to retain the laurels thoy had 6u often won. The umpires, Messrs Beard and Williams, were proposed, and they suitably responded. A move was now made to the cricket field, and the Pihautea team resumed their innings, and were all disposed of for 45 runs, At this sttge of the game it appeared as if the Pihautea team were going to be beaten for the first time. The East Ruamahanga team now went in for their second innings, and were all disposed of for 30 runs, leaving the Pihautea team 44 runs to make to win ; but had it not bean for tin courtesy of the East Ruamahanga team in allowing the time at which the stumps were to be drawn to be oxtended from 5 o'clock till 6, it would have resulted in a drawn game. As it was, Mossrs Beard 10. ami W. 13. Bidwill ami 0. R. Bidwill 18 and 10 not out, obtained the required number, Subjoined are the scores :
