SURPRISING ARCHERY SCORES.
Two ladies whoso shooting at the pubic contest among toxopholites have for some fow years been of the most remarkable character for steadiness and precision of aim, and fully entitles them to tho rank thoy have respectively held, namely that of tho national championess/ surprised the archery world by achieving two scores at the prize meeting of tho Cheltenham archers which were each of notable excellence. Mrs Piers Leigh, whom iudißposition prevented taking part in tho public matoho* of the present season, and to whose position of national championess her daughter succeeded at Bath in July last, lucceoded. in scoring 442 on the National Roundnamely, 40 hits at 60 yards, value 276, and 24 at 50 yards, valuo 166, and obtaining in her 70 hits no less than 14 golds. It will thuß be seen that Mrs Leigh lost only two arrows at the longer distance in tho entire round; but Hiss Leigh in » total score of 441, dropped but one of hor shafts, and had registered in her favor 47 hits, value 286, at 60 yards, and 24 hits, value 150, at 50 yards, her golds numbering eight. It should be remarked that the above scoring by Mrs Leigh was sixteen below hor memorable perform rnance at Leamington in 1885, but it was 10 in excess of the previously unapproaohed achievement by Miss Leigh at the Grand Western meeting in 1881, The weather at Cheltenham was highly favorable for an archory match, and the day was marked by suoh fine shooting, on the York Round, as 387 (83 hits) by Mr Piers Leigh; 327 (83 hits) by Mr T. T. S. Metcalfe; and 306 (76 hits) by LieutColonel Burton. The prize for most golds of tho season, 27, was won by Miss Oarnegy, the energetic sooretery of the Cheltenham Club.
