The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1886. THE MASTERTON SHOW.
We trust that the thundarstorm of yesterday has cleared the atmosphere for the thorough enjoyment of the Masteribu Pastoral Show, though the weather this morning appears somewhat unpropitious. This anniversary is now. regarded as "the jubilee" of the principal centre of population in the Wiararapa, and whatever may be the feeling with whioh it may be viewed south of the Waingawa, it is evident that in the north settlers are unanitnouß in celebrating it as the gala day of the year, Of course there are other meetings which bring about a large concourse of people, suoh as our races and Caledonian sports, but theßß festivities do not occupy theimportauce in the popular estimation which is attached to the Pastoral exhibition. Though we deprecate the disunion in Pastoral Show enterprise which now exists in the Wairarapa, we oan well understand the enthusiasm which is displayed in organising our local gathering and admire the zeal and determination with whioh the managing committee go to their work. Ten years back a Pastoral Show was wont to be held every alternate year in Masterton, and even then with the population and resources of the town on a much smaller scale than they are now, the success of the Masterton meetings was a matter of notoriety. Some well meaning stock owners, principally from the Lower Valley, succeeded in in depriving Masterton of -its show in order to concentrate the annual, exhibition in one permanent Bite. By this action they created a sense of griev. ance and injustice which has rankled year after year in the breasts of many settlers in this district and which at last found expression in the organisation of a separate show. The pluck
witli which this show was earned out last year carried all before is and will we trust carry the Committee through their arduous task lomoiiw even if they have to contend with unfavorable weather. We trust howover that the sun will shiueout brightly on that day, and enable the thousands who have been looking forward to it as a holiday to realise their expectations.
