MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee was hold last ovening, present Messrs Boddiiijtfon (Chairman,) Leahy, Hogg, Redman, and Payton.
The minutes of the previous meeting were road and confirmed. Tho Treasurer reported a credit balance of £2513s sd.
Correspondence was read from the Education Board, authorising leave of absence to Miss Koeling, and approving of Miss Watson as temporary mistress of the school. From the same stating' that the £SOO grant could not be further appropriated for the second school till the eite was vested in the Board. From Mrs Ransome re allowance for cleaning windows, From Town Lands Trust stating that a sub-Committee had been appointed re school site, and suggesting that ■ it might assist if a subOoinmittoo of the School Committee were appointed to aid in selecting a suitablo site.
The Chairman said he understood that the £SOO was being reserved by tha Board for the second school.
Mr Hogg objected to the Board reiiu-
inn to further iipimmiiito the £303 till the site was vested in it,
Mr Pay tinr suggested tlitf when the member for their distriet returned they could again lay their claim before the Board.
Mr Hogg contended that their claim was a good one,., and that it should not depend upon the advocacy of Mr Beethara, or any one member, and urged instant action.
The consideration of the Board's letter was then postponed. Tho letter from the Town Lands Trust was then discussed by tho Chairman and Messrs Hogg and P/lyton, the other members having' retired to attend to other engagements.' After a long and somewhat acrimitiiouß discussion it was agreed that a special meeting of the Committee should bo held on Monday • morning_ for the purpose of inspecting the various sites which were reported as being available,
The bead mastor reported the number of, children on school roll to bo 649 and the average attendance 483. He Btatdd that the attendance entitled the sohool to an additional teaohov and asked that a certificated master bo appliod for. Ho reported the result of the late examination to be an average pass of 85 per cent. He applied for curtains to divide two class rooms and asked the Committee to arrange for the annual distribution of prizes. He suggested that for the future the. annual grant in aid of the sohonl library would be more advantageous than expending money on prizes. It was decided to apply for an assistant master as requested. The Chairman and [ Mr Hogg were appointed a Bnb-Uommittee to expend a sum of £ls on prizes and an' amount of£3 10s was voted for the curtains required. Mr Redman, tho visiting member for tho past month called attention to the fact that he had observed that some of the younger .children squinted, and attributed this occular defect to the habit of holding their books too close to their eyes.
• A number of accounts wore passed for payment, after which thn meotiug Adjourned, Mr Boddington being appointed visiting member for.the enauing month
