WESLEYAN SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY.
The anniversary waa brought to a conclusion yesterday by the annual tea and public meeting There waa a very large attendance at the tea, and the 'arrangements made by the ladies for the supply of the creature wants of those present were admirable. Tables were supplied by Messrs Matthews, Creswell, and Donald, besides others which were provided by subscription from members of the congregation. These latter were superintended by lady teachers, amongst whom we noticed Mesdamea Kibblewhite and Temple, and Misßes Pybus, Glasae, Wagland, H. Perry, Evernden, Matthews, and Dagg. Considerable time was occupied in this part of the proceedings. After tea the company adjourned to the church The Rev. J. N. Buttle occupied the chair, tho children and choir being on the. rawed platform. Mr Temple conducted the singing most efficiently, indeed a special word of praise is due both to Mr Temple and Miss Perry (organist) for the success which attended their efforts in training the children. Addresses were delivered by the Chairman, and the Revs. J. Ward and D. Fulton. Mr Wostin (Superintendent); I moved a hearty vote of thinks to thr
ladies, speakers, Mr Temple (conductor), and all others who had assisted in carrying out the arrangements to such a successful issue. During the meotiug the following report was read by the Secretary, Mr R. M. Galloway.
ANNUAL REPORT, Mr OmiRMAN.-I havo the honor to report that the school has been making steady progress during the past year and the interest taken in the school by tho teachers has been greater than before, oa shown by tho attendance, the average for tho year being 14 which is higher than at any former period of the school. Tho average attendance "of scholars for the year has been 111, about 200 being on the roll. Tho conduct of the scholars is good, being well under the control of tho suporintendant, But for this we are indebted in a large measure to the secular schools, which inculcates respectful behaviour, and whe,re striot discipline is enforced. For the greater convenience in teaching, two classes of tho elder girls come into the Church after tho opening services and baok agam for the ctaing. The teachers meeting (which is held monthly, with the minister as Chairman, decided in the early part of the year to supply each olass with a box, in which to put their contributions towards periodicals and other expenses of the school, but on tho first Suuday in the month those boxes are not used, but a collection is taken up for Home Mission fund. The boxes are opened once a quarter, and the amounts of each class read out. During the time this system has been in operation £4 Is 4d has, been contributed by tho children towards the school funds, and £2 7s lid for Home Mission. The total receipts of the school for the past, year has been £57-18s Id and tho expenditure £42 3s 9d, thus leaving a credit balance £151454 d. We have added books to the library during the year to the amount of £12145, and hopo ro add considerably more from the proceeds of this anniversary and tho balance in hand. Periodicals are distributed on tho first Sunday of the month, each scholar in attendance receiving a paper. During the year 1540 magazines have been distributed in this way, _ In my last report I stated that our organist, Miss Perry, was never absent or late, 1 have great pleasure in saying that Miss Perry during the past year has early at her post, except on two occasions when absent from town. I thoupht it proper to record the fact that the young lady has fulfilled the duties of her honorary position in such an exemplary manner. We are again indobted to the choirmaster, Mr F. W, Temple for instructing the children to sing the Anniversary hymn, and tho officers of the school desire to express their thanks to him for his services.
R, M. Galloway, Secretary and Treasurer.
