Oretcown v Masterton. The first match of tho season between these clubs wub played on the Park Uval on Saturday, The matting pitch was uted and playod very well, though it got a bit bumpy towards the finish of the game. There was a goodly number of visitors on the ground who appeared to take great intorest in the game. Moore captained the home team, and H. Hawke officiated in like capacity for the visitors, Messrs Maokay and W. Lucena acting as umpires Masterton went first to the wickets and were soon disposed of for tho small score of 30 runs, eight of which were contributed by Selby, This was a great blow to tho home team, as batting was reckoned to be its strongest point. W. Judd bowled in fine style, getting six wickets for 18 runs. The Grey town team then went in and ran up the respectable total of 80, Cox carried his bat right through the innings, making 48, not out. His display of batting was really good, though he was badly missed by McKen- ''' zie after he had made two or threo runs. Had it not been for this, the visitors, score would also have been an exceedingly small ono. H, Hawke was the only other batßiuau to make a stand, getting into double figures. 0. Perry's trundling was dead on, and proved very effective. He secured six wickets at small cost, and bowled seventeen maiden overs, eight of them being in succession, in the second essay the local team made a much better stand, and their opponents had to try all their howling talent, before the last wicket fell for 89. Littlejuhn played a good inning for 20, showing a fine defence and plenty of patience, a trait which most of our knights of the willow sadly lack. Stokes (iO) and Perry (10 not out) also batted well, tho formor knocking the bowling around in fine style, until he was unfortunately run out, With 34 to got to win, the Groytown men went in, and put the required number together lor tho loss of two wickets, Cos and Cuff boing each not out for 12 and 17 respectively. The fielding of the visitors was a great contrast to that of the Masterton team, who missod any number of catohes, and this no doubt lost them the match. It is to be hoped that in future they will give a little more attention te this depart ment of the game. Stokes behind the wickets was the only redeeming feature in the fielding of the home team.
