No fewer than nine boys of ages varying from nine to fourteen years, were charged with larceny, at the Magistrate's Court Auckland yesterday. Five of them were convicted, three discharged, and one remanded. Auother boy 16 years old, was charged with perjury, and a young man.naraed Ellesniere Goodwin was accused of suborning perjury. On Sunday a miner named McGregor, found the body of an old man named MoDonnell or O'Donnell, in the bush on tho Longwood rango, Invercarsrill. The North Island lines absorbed £16,477 Is 6d, and the Middle Island linos £34,571 2s 4d. In tho corresponding period last year tho receipts wcro £68,033 9s 3d, of which the North Island linos earned £22,907 2s Id, and tho Middle Island linos £45,126 7s 2d. Ono hundred and thirty miners, working in the Kaitangata coal mine, hive struck work. The, strike originated through two of the men working in the mino-refusing to join tho Union. The othor mon thereupon gave notico' that unless these two* wore immediately dismissed they Would strike next day. The directors considered it would bo unfair to takothe means of livelihood from these men who have been with them for so many years. Matters wero explained to the men, but they wore obstinate, and gave notice again that if the mon were not instantly dismissed they would cease working, and this they did. Tho Directors have decided to' employ only nonunion men for the future.
With reference to tlio case of Mrs Jitokson which was brought before Mr Von Sturmor, R.M. yesterday, the North Wairarapa Benevolent Society inado an application this nioniiuy to have the order committing the children to tho Nelson Industrial School rescinded. Mr Von Stunner pointed cut that ho had no power to do this, but on tlio Society undertaking to increaßO tho weekly contribution to Mrs Jackson to 20s, and also to pay the house - rent and clotho the children, he suspended the ordor for a period of four mouths, In tho moanfcitno the polico hope to bo ablo to find out the whoreabous of the head of tho family and compel him to contribute to their support. In dealing with the case Mr Von Sturmor said lie was not aware of tho fact that it had already beau before Mr VYardell, his predecessor, or he would have taken (he opportunity of conferring with him before docidinsr the inattor.
