RE-OPENING OF THE ARMSTRONG CASE.
Die Armstrong case, which created such a sonsation a few months ago, wheu£4 Mr Stead, Mrs Jarrett, Mr Jacques, and™ Madame Mouray were each sentenced to imprisonment at the old Biilcy for abducting and assaulting Eliza Armstrong, will shortly bo re-opened, this time in the ' Queon's Bench Division of the High Court of Justice. The plaintiffs in the actions about to be brought aro-on tho one hand, Eliza Armstrong herself (who is represented by her father); and. on ; the other hand, Charles and Elizabeth Armstrong, the parents of Eliza; and the defendants are Messrs Thompson and Lambert, the proprietor and printer of the Pall Mall Gazette; Mr Stead, the editor of that paper; Mr Bramwell Booth, of the Salvation Army; and Dr Hcywood Smith, There aro in all six actions, and the damages claimed amount-' to £7200. Eliza Armstrong claims £IOOO from Mr Stead for libel, assault, aniL. false imprisonment, and another £100»! from Messrs Thomson aud Lambert'for libel. Mr- Armstrong claims from Mr Stead £SOO damages, and £SOO for the loss of his daughter's services; and Mrs ' Armstrong claims £7OO from tho same defendant for libel. Jn tho next action t (against Messrs Thomson and Lambert), 4 Charles Armstrong claims £SOO and his Nl wife claims £IOOO for libel. As against' Mr Bramwell Booth. Charles Armstrong ■• claims £4OO for the loss of his daushte/s service, and the girl Eliza claims £{(00 for assault, and £3OO for wrongful imprison' menfc. In the remaining action, that against Dr Haywood Smith, Eliza Armstrong chums £IOOO damages for assault. It will bo romombered that; Mrs Broughton, one of tho principal wit- - nesaes in tho Armstrong caso died sometwo months ago. Before her death she took proceedings for libel against Mr ratea Ihompson, and these proceedings re- ' suited in a satisfactory compromise, a handsome sum being paid over to assuage her wounded feelings. Another actionwas broughtby Mrs Broughton and her husband against It, fl. Squire, who is alleged to have reprinted, m tho name of A. Roberts, tho Pall Mall articles, in tha- ' course of which Mrs Broughton yAf described as "an old hand, in the wof* of procuration," Now that his wife is dead, John Broughton is catrying forward the action in his own name. £7OO damages are claimed for libel. This case - will probably come on during the present, fc Wo aro informed that the sum 'paid to "'' Mrs Broughton ivas £2OO, which her husrfl band got just as she was dying. { Tho reprcsentative of the same solicitors who had been instrumental in obtaining it, then called upon tho Armatrongs, f and sought their consent to bring action against the parties concerned. Encouraged by the success of Mr Broughton, they appealed to Mr Poland to know whether they would be doimj ri»ht by going on with, the action or not. Mr Poland, tluwh us managing clerk, informed them that he should not interfere; but so far as the' Uliza Armstrong fund was concerned he : ' felt that as trustee to that fund he could not allow aiiy portion of it to be used for law purposes. If, however, they felt they had any right of action, they, the parents, were at full liberty to follow any independent course. Eliza Armstrong herself still remains in the Princess Louise's home at Wanstead, where she is doinail exceedingly well, and getting on niceM with her education.-Auckland'News ™ '
