Captain Fox was to-day charged with assaulting Mr Mahonoy, editor.of Vanity Fair (society paper). The Bench considered that defendant had a grievance, but he should not have taken the law into his own hands.
" Auckland, August 27. There has been severe woathor expert onced here, accompanied wjth thunder, lightning, and rain. During the thunderstorm a thunderbolt struck the oarfch near the railway bridge at Manakau-road, Newmarket, The vivid flash and simultaneous thunderojap was observed from a passenger train passing at the time. It waß ascertained that the electric fluid had struok the earth, displacing about a ton of soil, which was scattered about. Somo of the telegraph wires in the district are fused.

There is a scare here with reference'to the' stability of the new municipal buildings which aro now hemp erected, aud fchoy aro said to be giving way in Borne places, This morning three independant architects were commissioned by the Mayor toestamine the buildings and report to the City Council. The general impression is that there is very little around for the scare.

The property was insured iu the Royal, Ll5O boing 011 the buildings and LIOO on the stock.
