Wellington, This day. A trial of Auckland manufactured ammunition was made at the rifle range yestorday afternoon in tho presonce of Major Mumietfce, Captains Coleman Messonges, and Marshall, Lieutenant Vogel and Mr E. T. Gilloii (Evaning Post). Captain Whitnoy, tho manufacturer of the ammunition, explained that the last sample of cartridges sent from Auckland to Wellington had by some mistake not been sent to tho range, but a previous simple substituted. The con-
ditions of the 'trial- were . ten shuts at 3VO yards second class targets rapidity of firing, Lieutenant Vogel who won the Spencer Cup at Wlmbleton meeting, fired with English manufactured ammunition, and Captain Whitnoy usei his own, both firing with atrango rifles. Lieutenant Vogel took lmin 35secs, making two bullseyes, five centres, three outers; total 29.' Captain Whitney took lmln 16secs Bcorlng five bullseyos, two centres, three outers; total 32, It had been intonded to make a further trial at at 800 yards, but the rain interfered. All the gentlomen present expressed themselves satisfied with the ammunition both 1 for accuracy and rapidity of firing The | weather was bitterly cold. Snow and hail fell this morning. Invercakgih, August 20,; At the Supreme Court to-day William Martin, an old settler, 60 years of age, was found guilty of poisoning aneighbor's horses, by mixing phosphorised oats with: feed in the field. The. prosecutor had married Martin's daughter very much against his wish, and this was supposed to be the cause of his poisoning the. horses.
