~vd, August 24. At a macs meeting of the unemployed, Mossrs Peacock, Thompson, and Mobs, M.H.R.'s delivered addresses. A vote of censure was' passed on Mr Poacock for his inaction about the unemployed in the Assembly and a vote of thanks to Messrs Thompson and Mobs for the steps taken by them was carried. Owing to the 801 l having-denounced a number of tho unemployed at the .mass meeting a 8 loafers who did not and would not work, at the clobo of the meeting to-day a deputation was appointed consisting of Mr Fiirnell (Chairman of' the unemployed) and Messrs Balljiiy and Jenne, to see Mr G, Reed editor of the Bell, and demand ■that .en apology be,printed.; A crowd followed the deputation, but on reaching tho Bell office thoy found Superintendent Thompson, who ha/l got wind of the affair, and a detnohmont of police on tho ground. Superintendent Thompson in-' formed tho crowd that thoy must not go in, but that two or three might to represent their sentiments. The editor threatened to eject one of the deputation for strong language, and refused to apologise for the article'or to retract it. Three hundred unemployed are now on public works, Government and municipal. Christciiurch, August 24. A number of single men and widowers whowere employedontho relief works by Government have been discharged. Forty of them waited on the Mayor to-day bogging for work, but it appears that nothing can be done for them, as Mr Anstay, tho Council's engineer, is absent from Christchuroh.
