CORRESPONDENCE.
(To tub Editor.)
" Sir,—Could you kiiidly give us a littlo information about-mud alley or Blush holo in tho west, portion <of tho borough of Masterton, known to aomo ot the Councillors as the lato Michael Dixon street, It is now in such a dangerous, tiltly^condition that it is neither safe noiw for ioinalea or children to pass up .or down It. : We, the female portion 'of the residents, are like prisoners in an uncivilised or uncultivated part, of tho world. Wo aro shut hi all the v winter Wd a great part of the summer,; unable to get out for mud and water. We cannot even get out-to attend a place of worship or inywhove olae, oven on a Sunday, :unless we come out like plvugmfcys, with our boots full of mud and wiP-or else don our husbands' boots and leggings, and then 1 suppose we should not' bo allowed^to eutora church or chapel In this style of dress, but there ia rift doubt we shall have to do it unless something is done for us to go in and out safely aud decently. Our children', too, are obligsd to be kept home from school, as we cannot send thein to wade through so much filth aud mud, and 'then sit. all, day iu wet boots to get their deaths from cold, What we particularly, want to know is, who the road belongs to; .so thatr we may apply to thorn to. see if we cannot got thorn to help us out of our prison of mud and filth. The road at one time belonged to Michael Dixon, now deceased. When the said, Michael Dixon was living ho laid off a 20 feet road, in opposition to tho rules of the Borough Council, who sent him notice if he laid off anything less tlian half a chain lie would be liable to a fine. Still he laid off 20 it in, and kept it as a private tho Oonneil'jaid nothing-against it, Sinco his death his trustees have been allowed i to put up two other sections and sell them by public auction, with 20 feet'?#road, whilst others who cut up and solraind aro obliged to give a proper width of road. Why is this? When the trustees sold the remainder of the land they bought back land of ono of the holders to mako It half a chain wide, and exchaugod land with another. Then we wore given to understand that if wo would give ten foot of land on each side of the road, and romove the fences the road should be done. Now, tho Councillors refuse to do it under tho plea that it is an illegal road, having no outlet, Has Colo-str'eot or Wrigley-s.trest an outlet ? No, And yet the Council made them both good roadß. Councillor Gapper said at one of tho Council meetings that mud alley did not be* long toJtheCorporation. Whodoes'itbolong to if not to the Borough ? We suppose it belongs to nobody, and yet wnon tho the R,M, complained of tho night-cart being a'nuisance in' Chapel-itaot, tho Borough put a culvert in Mudapey for the cart to be brduijhfc down. TVill you kindly give us what information you can respecting this disgraceful mud hole and greatly oblige your regular subscribers and residents of this disgraceful place. If you require any proofs with rogard to tho troth ot our mud and slush QtLyoui faithful servant for them, W. BlifSorn, We are, &c., Mrs Wood, . Mrs Humphrv, MRB 0, WILTOk, . MRSC.RIXON, [Tho ladies who liave written the above letter should wait as a - deputation on the Borough. Council at their next mooting, Thoy havo a substantial griovance, and should insist upon it beintr remedied,—Ed.W,D.] :
