POULTRY PIGEON AND 'CANARY •■' '; SHOW. The first separate show'underthe auspiceß of the .above society was held in the public Hall, Carterton, yesterday, and proved fairly successful, The judging was completed about'half paat one o'clock, when tho doors were thrown open and during the whole afternoon there was a good, -number,of visitors. The entries were more numeroiuUhan-for the show held in in connection with .the horticultural branch j in December \ last. • year, but we hardly think the quality was improved upon. The judges were Messrs Ivor James (poultry), B; Boys (pigeons), and S. Noary (canaries). Ofcoursetheformergentleman had the most onerous task, and though he no doubt did his best, he failod to give. anything like satisfaction, and • most. cortainly made some very glaring mistaken The stagini? was well arranged and the SecreferyMrH.il. Welters, and the .Committee may be congratulated sn their «rangoments. The first on the catalogue, was the Poultry; - : * V In which class there w,ere. eighty-two. entries, the first to receive attention from , the judge being the, ■' : . BUCK RED OAMB, represented, by Mr Billington .beat Mr Elkins> 'but the : 'de : ' ciaio'n "should have been reversed, the cock in the" first prize pen being too heavy in both hackle and'tail.. In •-.. ; . .■' , • rnioprß there was but' one entry, which'waa. passed over* Now we have the' owner's
atturance, that these bird*" have token no 1*» than.'ewjhte first and scton gpecjal prias, w that bis'complaint q\ unfai? treatment has some grown**., That the birds are worthy of'recognition ."there'is no doubt In any other variety, for Elkins took first honon with an elcaod*n§ly nice pair of DUCKWINQ OAME, which fully deserved the honor, In SILVER OEBY pOBKIKO there was one entry, Mr 0, Simmonds being very highly commended. This breed appears to be sadly neglected nowa days. i
' Coohins Wore not a first class lot. Mr W. 0. King took first and second with Buff and Partridge respectively, Mr Plulpot receiving second honors in the former class Dark Brahmas. Wero well represented, there being seven entries They were a nice lot, but rather small all round Mr J. E Shelley received the first award for a very good nan, Mr Kirk's coming next, and Messrs Elkins and Clay being each highly commended ' Light Bbahhas Wore also a nice lot, but the Judge was decidedly at fault here. Mr Bunny's exhibit Bhould most cortauily have boen placed first, whde one of Mr Moore's pens should have received tho second award, Langsdans Weio decidodly poor; and here tgaiu the first and second prices should have been reversed. Tho beet cook of tho class was in the highly commended pen, Plymouth Books
Only one exhibit, for which Mr King received a well merited pnzo Houdaj,s
In this class there were only two entries Mr King securing first place, MrF. D. Polling being commended The latter was deserving of a second place, the hen in his pon being the best of the two.
■ Leghorns. ,■•■'-.•' •■■. Were fairly represented in jwth Brewn and White,' k the latter. claßß '. only a second prize was."awarded, •whioh was a grosß piece of injustice to Mr .Fear's ex*, hibit, This pair was, very highly com-mended,-but they certainly; deserved first honors.''.The cock's; comb.waß eiichtly injured in aome manner, and this .was the reason giyen for/not piading them 'hisher, and yet thoy were awarded the special for the best pen, of Leghorns I Slightly inconsistent, '. ,' : • Black Spanish." '•
Here Mr P; 0. Anderson."laid-' all'. Ms own way, taking first and second prim The henß were especially good birds. : '
Andaiusi'ans. . . Two entries,, Mr Kirk taking fjrsi By far the best hen was ma pen whiph was passed over, and should have received some recognition. - .'■ ■".' .... Hambumhs . were fairly represented!'. In. Golden Ponoilled, -Mr Elkins took first,.Mr Kirk second, and Mr King highly commended. The beßt hen waß iu the latter" pen, but the cock was notsogood.' Silver Pencilled were represented by one pen, exhibited by Mr Elkinß, whioh wero passed over.. These birds havo taken numerous prizes, and why they should be passed overnow we could not understand. Mr Billiugton was commended for his pair of Golden Spangled,' aud Messrs Clay and Wilton received first .and second honors for silver" spmgied, both pens being vory good. . . Golobn Spangled Polakds.
There was only one entry,;'and this was a very good one,-but, forjiome ,un-. accountable reason they ,W.ere passed oyer. :'.. ■ Wyahdotoes; v ■ This class wad represented bV.apair* of chickens; exhibited by Mr E. W. Dorset. One characteristic of .the'*fo.wl jb a neat rose comb, but oho of tho. chicks shown had a single one-a disqualification. Gbbse, DuPhs and Ttokbyb wero a very good lot all round, Mr King taking the majority of awards. .:. Besi Sinolb Cook. • took firßt with.a. dark Bramah, and second '• and highly/ commonded with Buff Cochins, ' The two latter should certainly have been placed belore thoßrahma, as the latter had a spotted breast, and was kr.ock-krieed., . Best Single Hen. In this class there were-four-entries, and Mr W, MoKenzie took .first :with a splendid Brown Leghorn pullet, which was also pronunced to be tho best hen in tho room', Mr W, fl, Clay reooived second place for a nice JJark Brahma hen, Mr- Andorsbn's Black Spanish being highly commended, and Mr Seed's Lang--shan commended. ...... DuokEoos, . There was but one entry, but as the judge was under the impression they were double yolked, hfl'only commended them, .The-schedule stated the priw would be given for the heaviest egga; so we fail tpsee why it was withheld-. PIGEONS AND CANARIES '■ were a poor show. Mr C. Simmonds took moat of the awards in both classes. " Tho following is.fcrie PEIZB.LIST. POULTRY. ' -■' Black Red Game-2 entries; J, Billington 1, A.
