The Chairmau said they had no grant boyond £2BO voted for the Forty Mile Bush road, and at the end of September they would have to make some reduction because £2BO would uofc see thorn through twelve monthfl. The Engineer was called iu and said there were throe others on the same lino who had similar difficulties to contend with in living some distance from, their work. Jt was resolved on the motion of Cr Beetham that the consideration of the application be postponed .until the question of the Forty Mile Bush grant was definitely fixed. BNQINBBR'B BERVIOEB. The services of the County Engineer were granted to the Castlepoint Road Board, the Engineer to be authorised to employ Mr McLachlau to do the work. WAIPOUA OVERFLOW. The Minister of Public Works wrote inroply to the County's application, for assistance in dealing with the Waipoua overflow referring them to a letter sent 12 months ago to R, J. Fitton, in which it was stated that if a Board of River conservators waß formed the Government would subsidise it, Cr Beetham said if anything was to be done at all it soeraed to him it must be done by a Board of Conservators. If tho County or tho Road Board commenced to interfere with the river they would get into difficulties. At the Bame time it was extremely costly to keep the road in repair whilst tho rivor was in its present state, The Engineer's report on the subject was road. His suggestion was that the river be allowed to flow as at present, and the County to make and maintain fords and croßsini's where necessary. Ur Beetham Bilid there was an alternative method, and that was to shift tho road. Tho Government had suggested damming up the crook altogether, and he though tliat waß tho proposal that would havo boon jumped at, TkeEngmoer said to do that would be to Hood the properties north of the dam. Or Beotham moved that tho Engineer's recommendation be adopted, Woodville-Tiiuumea SamEMEiYr. The names and particulars of owners in this special settlement were submitted by the Secrotary with a request that they should bo put on the County Electoral Roll, _ The Clerk was instructed to reply that it was too lato in tho presont year to accede to the request, SEPARATE HIDING. Cr Good presented a petition in favor of creating the Alfredton district a separate ridiug. Tho wish of his district waß almost unanimous. He thought it would make but little difierence to Ekotahuna, as that could be attached to the Pahiatua riding.

Cr MeGardlo seconded the motion, pro forma: Ho could see a great difficulty m granting the petition, which should have shown how Eketahuna riding, was to be represented on the Council. It would leave that district disfranchised.

Cr Good said hio suggestion was that the Eketahuna district should be joined toPahiatua The member for that district was more cognisant of its affairs, Cr Beotham asked why they wanted to get rid of Eketahuna, Had they any reason for doing so 1 Were there any conflicting interests ? CrGood said he wanted to got the Alfrodton Riding mado co-torminus with the road district.

■ The' Chairman said it certainly did not seem right to do such a thing without consulting Eketahuna. They would be thrown out altogether. What advantage, he asked, was to accrue from it 1 Cr Maunsell said if there was a petition from Eketahuna to be put into [.some.other riding he could understand l&" - '" ■■:■ r - ~ The Chairman-pointed out that there was nothing in tho Act that gave grounds for carrying out the petition as the ridiny was in conformity with the Act. He asked if there was any justification for tho petition at the present time, especially hi the absence of any petition from Eketahuna. The petition could only be considered on the application of threefifths of the whole riding which included Eketahuna and Alfrodton. It waß resolved to reply to tho petitioners That 8B far as the Oounoil is at present advised the petition is not in accordance with the Act. AKITIO DISTRICT. The ratepayers of No. (land? Wards of tho Castlepoint Riding petitioned to bo constituted a separato Riding and Road district. The clerk pointed out the signatures wore not verified, and tho petition in its present stato was informal. The matter was loft over. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee reported That they had opened tenders for removing cottages and painting bridges and that tho tender had boen accepted for painting Te Hoe bridge, The bridges in the Castlepoint Riding would not beon dealt with until they had a reply promising assistance from there. Crßeetbain moved that the painting of the Manawa and Mungapakeha bridges be deferred. It would give the Castlepoint Board time to give a roply to the Council, That riding was very much overdrawn and the Council would be pre vented from doing really necessary work in that district unless that riding found funds; Or Dagg seconded the motion, which was put and carried. The time for closing tenders for the removal of the present and erecting new roaduieiiß' whares was extended to 10th inst, The report was adopted. FINANCE. The Finance Committee report was read and adopted : Accounts amounting to £230 5s 2d were passed for payment. HARBOR BOARD EMIOWMENTS. The ohairman said the committee appointed in this case had entered into a correspondence with the Harbor Board to the effect that [the Council would assist the Board to obtain endowments provided 1 they did not take pastoral or small farm lands. They suggested the Board should ask from the Government the whole of foreshore rights from Petone. The foreshore would, be far better in the hands of the Harbor Board than in the hands of the Government, The Board could get their rights by mustering up the whole of their forces and bringing pressure to bear on the Government. The correspondence would show that the Board had been neglected ( by every successive Government. The present committee of the Houbo had recommended that certain land taken from i

the. Board, but of little value, be returned to taem",and the committee recommended that- the 1 Government should consider their-rights, ThrwlioU of the correspondence was laid on'the table. BKETAHONA POUND. Cr Good suggested that the site for the pound should be on a part of the section on which the proposed office at Eketahuna would be erected. He had seen a settler there who would erect the necessary works for a pound at a charge of 10 per cent interest thereon, and would undertake the office of pouudkeeper on condition of receiving the fees,

The Chairman said there were no funds to purchase the land to put the office on.

Cr McCardle moved, That the higher priced site mentioned in tho Engineer's report, on part of which the County office now stood, bo purchased by the County, and the advisability of erecting a pound thereon, be left to Ur Good and tho Engineer t» report on at the next meeting, Or Beetham seconded the motion pro forma, but would point out that the cost would be about £SO, and he did not know what fund they had to do it with. Cr tycCaidle pointed out that it was absolutely necessary to remove the office off tho main road, and they would have to got a site for it. Cr liagg moved and Cr Maunsell seconded, That the Engineer be empowered to arrango for an exohango of the House for a section of land, subject to the right of the Road Boaad to the use of the office for a term. The amendment was lost and the motion carried. CASTLEPOINT BOARD. Cr Maunsell said he had boon deputed by tlte Council to wait upon tho Board re funds, but for want of a quorum tho usual moetiug had fallen through. The Chairman asked Cr Maunsell to try and arrange for a special meeting of the Castlepoint Board being held to deal with matters at an oarly date, Tenders were opened for building additions and new roadmen's cottage as follows :-ohtts. E, Danielle, £130; T. Ryan, £154; J. Dawson, £159 12s; Brown & Rogers, £170; W. Bruee, £l7O 2s 6d. Tho tender of 0. E. Daniells was accepted conditionally. The engineer's report was read and adopted.

It was resolved that Kertland bo allowed to finish the contract in accordance with tho engineer's report, Messrs Bacon and Bright's application for a tram acroßS the main road was granted mi tonus recommended by the engineor.

In reference to the trespass of pigs on the main road, it was resolved to notify the owners that if the nuisance was not abated within one week front date of notice proceedings would be taken. ■Or Dags; was elected to the Hospital Board. The Council tlion adjourned.
