The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11, 1886. THE REPRESENTATION BILL.
The fiepresentalion Bill ia ut last before the House and ia (ho interest* of the uoxt general election it ia desirable that it should become law. If it gets through this session it will be by passing through both Chambers like a football, each membor getting perhaps one good kick at it. Triennial parliaments have been a failure in New Zealand, single electorates have been a disappointment, the special Maori representation has been an oxpensive and virtuous contrivance for the manufacture of a marketable block vote, and universal su'fferage, for that is praotioally what we now enjoy, h&B lowered the status of the New Zealand parliament. The result of our legislation so. far to improve our legislature has simply been disastrous, Members, no doubt, would, like to take a- few steps backwards and undo the mischief which they and their predecessors have accomplished. Even Major Atkinson, one of the chief culprits in these matters, shows signs of repentance. It is, however, easier to give privileges than to take them away again, and the past concessions to King Mob are irrevocable, We trust Sir Robert Stout's Bill till become law, bb the best solution of an immediate difficulty,'but we scarcely expect from it any settlement which will be permanently acceptable to the colony. ■ .•■'
