The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, JULY 27, 1886. THE MASTERTON MANGAHAO SPECIAL SETTLEMENT.
An unfortunate obstacle has for some time past arrested the progress of the Masterton Mangahao Special Settlement. The difficulty has apparentlyarisen over the survey of the block. The members of the Association, desire the sections to ho laid off in such a manner that they will be readily accessible, and the Government appear 1 desirous to satisfy their reasonable demands. Unfortunately, however,; the Surveyor-General has advised the Minister that the request of the Asso-1 ciation cannot be complied with, as! other interests would be affected by allowing a strip) of the baoU country to be rejected Ivy the Assoeiatism. The ] question seenw. to be whether the interests of tha colony or those of the Association should be sacrificed. Possibly there may be some middle course by which, the antagonistic interests might bs reconciled, but we doubt whether the Association has gone the best way to work to solve this problem. Formerly it was .the universal custom in this district to plnce negotiations of this character in the hands of the representatives of the Wairarapa in the House of Representatives, The zeal and tact •-.■ which Mesßrs Beetharo and Buchanan have from time to time applied to such duties have invariably resulted in advantage to their constituents. A ne.w method, however, has of late been adopted in dealing with the Government which appears to ub an anything, but an improvement on the old one.. Mr McCardle, anticipating his fntwra honors as a member of' the Legislature, ami possibly in his ■capacity &»; honorary member for Pabiatua, undertakes the task of bringing under the notice of Ministers, the wants of Wairarapa North. He is constantly button-hoi ing Ministers and heading everlasting deputations to khft' Government offices. Of course Ministers recognise it as a part of their duty, and a very onerous portion-of it, to be constantly: approached by mem. beri of the legislature, but when
outsiders take the privilege, of MII, R'g i dropping in ttt all'hours, iu season and out of : season, they must echo the old ciy "Have us frorc our friends," and .devoutly wish Pahiatua and its selfelected member at the' bottom of the ' deep blue sea. We have heard on pretty good authority, viz., a prominent member of the Government party, that are simply wnrrie.d to death by Pahiatua deputations, and that though Mr Beetham is a political opponent, tbey would .far sooner arrange the business of this district through him than he subjected to the amiable but worrying persistency of the member for Pahiatua. As far as Wft can judge the Government in their irritation are beginning to snub this district. It is no use members of the Masterton-Mangahao Association abusing the Government, Their own party are in power, and it would be impossible to obtain a more friendly Cabinet' It is, however, possible to sicken their best friends by continuous importunity and this is really the situation. The' Government' 'have done much for Mr McCardle and his f rends but the more they have done for them the oftener they appear in the Ministerial offices .asking new fai ore. We recognise in the present difficulty experienced by the Masterton-Mangahao Association an instance which illustrates the evil to which we have referred. If Mr McCardle would abstain from fortnightly deputations to Ministers till such time as he is able to' write M.H.R, after his name;' we feel certain that the Gov eminent, would be extremely grateful to him and the interests of the district would be much benefitted. It is not often that we have to complain of an excess of zeal on the part of one of our public men, and we should not do so in the present instance, as we fully appreciate Mr McCardle's public spirit and integrity, did we not see clearly that the interests of the district were compromised by au indiscreet course of action.
