HUNT FOR THE GREAT BARRIER MURDERERS.

(United Press, Association.) Auckland, This day. The first information reached Superintendent Thompson regarding a man supposed to be Gaffroy by means of letter from a settler residing near the South Heads, Manukau Harbor. In consequence of tho communication Detective Tuohy was sent to Manuhau via Onehunga. He took with him a photograph of the murderer, which was positively identified by the settler .who gave the information' and two other persons. Detective Tuohy's investigation showed that some days previously the supposed Caffrey towed across to the JNorth Head, and the last trace of him was at Cornwallis Bay, where he passed the night in a bushman's hut. The facts regarding him collected by Detective Tuohy certainly gave color to the belief that ho is the criminal evading justice. He gave different accounts of tho place ho came from, some times saying, he sailed from the Thames and at others trom Rotorua. He was very mistrustful in his demeanor and at times very muoh excited, almost to the verge of madneßß. On Thursday last detective Tuohy met Superintendant Thompson at Onehunepr, and the result of the interview was that Constables Haslett, Caroll, and O'Brien were sent off with detective Tuohy to follow the trail from CnrnaralleE Bay. In the meantime Constable McKay, of the Water Police, who knowß Caffrey well, was sent to Kaipara to search all vessels lying at Kaipara Heads and at Helonsville. Sergt. Thbmpsou also telegraphed to Arafcapu and Daraaville urging watchfullnesß. At 2 p.m. Sergt, Clarke and party had started for Dr. Stockwells, close to the coast. Two settlers, who were met on the mountain road near Henderson, were shown photographs of Caffrey and Penn, but did not recognise either as that of any man on the hills. The police intend scouring the hills, rieht through to Helensville, calling at all the bush mills on the road. Detective Tuohy is following tho track to Manakau Heads, as tho man is probably making for Helonsville.
