LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
Mr Menzies presenter a petition iriim Otago, prayinc that the Contagious Diseases Act may be expunged from the Statute Boole. Mr pollen brought up a report of the •committee appointed to prepare reasons why the Council refused to agree with certain amendments of the House in the Lncftl Bodies Loan Bill. The report was agreed to,- and a message to this effect was transmitted to tlio House, • Mr Buckley gave notice of motion that the Standing Orders be suspended bo as to enable the Council to sit on Mondays. Mr leaves moved that in the opinion of the Council it is highly inexpedient that the Government should provide a large and constant' supply of stoats and weasels as recommended by the Joint Committee on the rabbit nuisance. Mr Chamberlain abandoneid the resolution relative to protection, owing to the lateness of the session. • •• The Council decided to give the use of the Chamber for an entertainment nexi week in aid of the relief of'fts&fctkg by the Tarawera eruptions. : i . The Employment of Females Act vrasj committed but progress not being reported with a proviso to sit again, the Bill, was virtually killed. The Goyerninent Loans to Local Bodies Bill was committed, and the Council adjourned.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Replying to Mr Russell it was stated that Government would cause a survey of some sort to be made of th'o bost, line 1 of road from the end of Patea road, Hawkes Bay county, through the Rangitikei county, to the nearest convenient position for a station on the North Island Trunk Railway. Replying to Major Atkinson it was stated that the Engineem-OMef had recommended that surveys should be 1 made to enable an 'opinion to be formed, as to relative merits of routes to conneet Taranaki with the Main Trunk Line hy Stratford and Mimi and that Government intended to have this done. Replying to Mr Guiness, it was stated that there was no lawful authority for the payment of the travelling expenses of Grand Jurors while attending Supreme Court, and Government did not intend doing so. That the Trustees 'of the Government Hospital would feceive the subsidy claimed by them of J143 2s 7d in ten days, • : Replying to Sir Georgo Grey Sir R. Stout said that there was no necessity to bring in a Rill requiring the word poison" to be attached to eaoli paokaae of poisonous raatohes which may be sold in the colony, That no further enquiry was nece?saiy by Government of the Waimate Railway Debentures. If further investigation were asked for it would be a reflection on the 'Committee. ! Mr Macandrew moved that tho Ota?o Harbor Bridge Bill be wmhiittei' He said in order to overcome objections that were made to the Bill he had eliminated the rating forces from it. " : Mr Gore hoped the Rill; would not be allowed to pass but thought it was useless to. oppose, its committal," After further discussion the House went into Committee on the Bill which was passed with amendments. . , .
