Shrewsbury maintained a grand defence and ran up the score to 164 before a catch disposed of him. The innings closed with a total of 353 runs. For the Australians the most successful bowlers were Trimble 2 wickets for 30 runs, and Spofforth 4 for 70. After the usual delay the visitors went to the wickets, but none of the batsmen succeeded in making any lengthened stand against the excellentbowling of Briggs and Barnes, who both were dead on, the wicket, and the innings closed for 121 runs, Tim highest individual scorers were Jones caught 25, Scott leg before wicket 30, Palmer caught 20, Blackam bowled 23, For the Englishmen, Briggs took five wickets for 30 runß, and Barnes three for 20. Being in the minority of 222, the Australians had to follow on, and at the close of the day's plav the score on the second inuiugs stood at 12 with one wioket down. London, July 20.
