CORRESPONDENCE.
DOES THE, RESULT WARRAIiT THE MEANS.
(Tom Editor.) Sir,—There is now going oh, ih the Wairarapa a mission having for its object the rescuing of drunkards 'from their doom. lam not going to insinuate any-, thing against the motivesof thoseengaged in the work but I want ,them to pause and think. _ What is the nature of the oath? Is the indiscriminate-manner in which they are receiving the oaths of semiintoxicated persons whose feelings have been worked upon to the highest pitch or»ditable or Ohnst-like ? They- ask a man who, with every inducement to lead a sober life, the prosperity of himself and family, the happiness and comfort of his wife and children, hia own hopes for this world and the hereafter, who is yet unable to resist the undesirable craving for drink, to take upon himself an obligation in the sight of God and the people that he will for over, from, tint' moment give up the use of intoxicating liquors. Ask a worldly minded man what -are the chances of such a oorson keeping his' oath, and he will immediately offer to bet against it-his way of showing his opinion. Ask a Christian man who knows him and he will gigh and show bis doubts.; Ask one of the very parties who have been the means of getting him to make that oath whether he will-be true to it and he will only say "Let us hope so." Now what is tho position of that man when the excitement of the meeting is wer I.Will he keep that oath ? Has h,o kept the vows ho took to love, honor and cherish his patient and loving likely ho will keep the. cibligation forced upon him against his inclination ? Most decidedly not. Before it has got wind that lie has " donned the blue" he will be off to tho hotel and secure what is to him second nature, and he will haveadded perjury to his other sins and drink all the deeper to smother his feelings. And what about those, who precipitated himinto the crime, Shall they go scot free? Will they be held harmless and he be punished? Let the promoters and leaders of the movement now being earned on pause and reflect before they urge any more to swifter perdition. I am, &c., oBWBim
