FOOTBALL.
A mcncE match was held at Oartertctn on Saturday afternoon between the representative trial team and all-comers, The trial team ma composed of the twelve following :—Back, E. Udy; three-quarter-backs, A. Udy, W. Moore; halfbaoks, W. Perry (captain), J. Perry, and R. Kemble; forwards, 0. and J. Beard, Webster, G. Humphries, Ewenand Fairbrother. Amongst the eighteen all-comeri were the following:—Baoks, C. Perry (captain), P. PeUing, Holmwood, Bamber and Dempjey; forwards, Kibblewhite, Welch, Stokes, J. and T. Moore. After two forty minutes spells the trial team were victorious by r.wo goals and one try to one try, The forward play of the victors was carried on throughout with a dash and spirit that was irresistable, the two Boards and Webster playing in a way that kept things lively for the opposing forwards. The often proved very able backers in fast play. Ewen would be more effootiye 'i he would trust more to his feet, and not evince such desire to piok np the leather. J. Perry, as usual, was all there olote ap, and had an able partner io hu brother, W. Perry. The latter played one of the lastest games yet seen on the Carterton ground, some of his dribbling being sensational, and was in the thick ef the play throughout. Kemble did not show representative form. He played, hard, but lacked judgment in passing, which mort than once placed his side in danger. Situated as he was, centre half, hii play should have been long side paesos, and not short ones over his shoulder. Moore as three-quartor back, came off fairly well, but allowed the opposing forwards to get on him more than once when he had time to drop the leather well up the touch line.. A. Udy took his passes olean, kicked with preoision, and ran well. His collaring was first class, none of his opponents being able to pais him. E. Udy appeared to be at home as full back, but would, as a heavy weight, have bean more isrviceable among the forwards. However, he played a good back game, picking up dean and kicking well into touoh. The best of the all-comer forwards were Kibblewhite, i Welch and Stokes. The former came out with his dribbling, setting through the opposing forwards several, times. Weloh played a dashing game, and succeeded once in getting through all but. the full back. Stokes played a hard forward game, and kept well on (he leather, his lining out rushes being very effective. Holmwood stopped the rushes of the opposing forwards in a very clever manner, and also put in some very serviceable spurts that gained, considerable for his side. Bamber and Dempsey were both well in their places, but the number of amateur quarters impeded their play a good deal. ; 0. Perry waa undoubtedly the best back on the field, his running, kicking, and fending being, |he admiration.of all. Polling was full of work,-and wa« equal to- the miny onslaughts made upon him. The opposite side would-have increased itheir score many times, but for hie judieous play. The number of young wpirants among the all-comers spoiled some of the efforts of the older players, especially by the hard kicking in the scrimmages. . We understand that the next representative practise will be played ip. Greytown en Saturday, next, and that the match Wellington v Wairarapa will b» played in Wellington on ikturdajr, Slit inst,
