CORRESPONDENCE.
1 « KIMBERLY. (To ids Ediiok.) Sir,—ln the Winuim DAitTof July 6th you reproduced ihe following paragraph from the Post:—" An old; Wairarapa resident,'Mr Johnston, of Masterton, has, we are creditably informed.'ieceived letters from two of hia nephews,'!, who at the time of writing had been for two months on the Kimberly, goldfield. During that pariod one had tbtainsd HOOozs of gold and the ether SOOosb, and they strongly urged a number of their Wairarapa friends to join them." As I am no doubt the individual referred to as "anold Wairarapa resident," you will! perhapi p»rrak mi to explain and to
some extent contradict the stuttmonte contained in; the paragraph, and account for their origin. Some days since I was travellingib train, andiu the, same compartment with myself and others was aMas'terton resident who was bound for the same port for the purpose of seeing- a :ffiend of his off by the "Triumph," which m nhout starting for Kimberly. Naturally the conversation turned upon.the probable prospects of the diggers, and I referred to a report which had appeared in the Sydney Daily Telegraph to the effect that four men from Kimberly diggings had come down to Derby with lOOOozs of gold. I told my companion that soon after that acr count had appeared I rocoived a letter, from a cousin of mine enclosing a nete from one of the four men "referred to, confirming the statement referred to in the Sydney Daily Telegraph. Two of these men 1 kupw very well to hare been in the Carpentaria country for about 15 years. They were for a time in my employ. It is possible and even probable they had the lOOOom of gold as stated, but I can say nothing as to where they got it nor the timo they had been obtaining it. In consequence of the numerous enquiries I hare had made to me since the paragraph appeared in your paper, I trust you will publish this explanation, lam. <fec,
