Received 18th, 5.30. p.m.—-In the House of Commons to-day Mr Bryce the Under Secretary of Foreign Affaire replying to the question stated that Freycinet the French Premier had renewed the assurances previously given that France would respect the independence of the New Hebrides, but that Lord Lyons the British Ambassador had been instructed to call attention to the fact that the hoisting of the French flag in that group had occasioned great excitement in the Australian Colonies. Mr Bryce further stated that the captain of the H.M.S. t/ndine has been ordered to proceed to the New Hebrides to report to the Government as to the actual scate of affairs in that group. Sir Robert Herbert, the Permanent Under Secretary for the colonies informed Graham Berry, Agent General for Victoria, that the Government have decided to forward a request to the French Government that the New Hebrides should be evacuated by its troops as soon as fear of outrages on French subjects has been removed. Gladstone has gone to Edinburgh to prosecute his electoral campaign in Midlothian. Consols are at 101. Colonial breadstuffs and tnllow are without quotable alteration in value. The market rate has been reduced by and is now at 1 per cent., being 1J per ceht. below the,J»ank rate. At to-day's wool sales a catalogue "comprising 13,100 bales was submitted. Good competition was experienced for the various lots offered. The weekly returns of the Bank of England, published to-day, shejv the total reserve of notes and bullion to be £11,700,000, an increase of £300,000' since last report. The proportion of reserve to liabilities is 40 per cent., being 1 per cent, higher than last week. The Coptic arrived at Plymouth yesterday evening. Her cargo of frozen meat is reported to be in good condition. Sydney, June 18. Zealand wheat remains at 4s 2d per bushel: N.Z. oats, unchanged, 2s 6d ; maize, per 561bs, 3s sd, a decline of one penny; Sugar Co.'s No. 1, £ls per ton; pollard, 2d per bushel dearer, Is §d ; potatoes, 85s per ton, an

It is understood he will retire into private life. Eondon, June 18. A grand review of troops will take place at Aldershot on the second proximo before Her Majesty the Queen. The leading colonists now in England, will be present on the occasion.
