The Masterton Masonio lodge, 1430, E. 0., meet on Monday, June 21st, the Festival of St, John the Baptut. A match will be played to-morrow between a team from the Opaki and the first fifteen of the Bed Stars, in the new ground kindly lent to the Stars by Mr G. Dixon, on the Dixon Estate. The following team will represent the Stars: 1 D'Arcy, Karaitiana, Hill, Hoar, Thompson, Welch, Emmett, Blinkhorne, Pejling, Gardner, Fteeth, Martin, Bannister, Watson, and Ewihgton. Emergencies: T. 'Captain Donald. put the men through the manual exercise, and Majors Butts and Bunny-inspected the arms and accoutrements. Major Bunny notified that the attendance was not sufficient to count as a parade, and that the fines for ncn-attendanCe would be Btrictly enforced. i It was notified that nominations for the vacant Lieutenancy would be taken at the next meeting. Major Bunny presented Vol, R, McKenziewith Captain Donald's trophy, consisting of a tea and «offee service, won by him in the recent contests, Corporal fabblewhite was promoted to "Sergeant," The Lyceum, Carterton was well filled last evening, when the entertainment in aid of the widow and family of the late B. Sewell took place. Previous to the opening the.Masterton Brass Band under tho leadership of Mr Papworth,- played several selections outside, which drew a large and admiring leathering. The Masterton String Band under the leadership of Mr Lundquviat, consisting of piano, three violins, double bass, clario- : nette, and cornet, played two overtures in a style that elicited great praise. The concert portion of the programme consisting of songs, duets, and musical selections was carried out with great success, most of the items being redemanded. A lively farce by tne Greytown Amateurs brought the entertainment to a close, when the Hall was cleared for dancing, about twenty couples occupying the floor till past midnight. The gross proceeds amounted to about £ls.

The Mastertoii School Committee met at the Institute last evening. PresentMessrs Boddington (Chairman), Lowes, Muir, Redman, Loahy and Payton.' The proceedings were somswhat- brief as some of the members desired to join the municipal meeting which was being held in another part of the building. Tho question of tho second school site was held over. The Board intimated that the result of the census would bo obtained as far as it affected children of. school age, but that the Registrar-General could not supply it for separate districts. The head master reported that the average attendance for the past month, 373, had been affected by severe weather and mumps. Miss Keeling reported an average of 81, and stated tkt her attendance roll had been affected by sickness. Accounts were passed for payment as follows :-6. M. Wood's Btock sale at Taratah yesterday was well attended, and a considerable amount of business was transacted at the following prices:—Lambs in the wool, ss; full mouth ewes in lamb, 3s 6d; two-tooth ewes, 6s; two-tDoth wethers, 8s (id; Calves, 24b ; Yearlings, 29s to 335; Heifers, 42s to 80s; Cows, £3los to £4l6s. When a man has got the gold fever he does not stick at trifles. He realises hla property no matter what the state of the market is. A house and section in Bentley'a estate owned by a digger who is bound for Kimberley will be put up to auction by Mr F> H, Wood to-morrow, and knocked down to the highest bidder, regardless of sacrifice.

Messrs Lowes and lorns will holfl at Eketahuna to-morrow au extensive and unreserved sale of the stock-in-trade of a general store consisting of groceries, iron-* mongery, clothing, tools, cooking utensils, boots, cutlery, orockery and general sundries on account of Mr Gilvray, who is leaving the district, also on account of Mr F, McDowell, as vendor, a splendid assortment of winter drapery, clothing, blankets, calicos, flannels, dress goods, hat 3, boots, &c. The sale will commence at 11 o'clock.
