The four seamen who deserted from the American whaler Petrel at Russel weresentenced to a month's imprisonment The enquiry into charges against Captain Reid and the mate Foley has com* menced at Eussel. A good deal of evidence was taken, and it is understood the investigation i 3 only a preliminary one, and that it will have to be taken again here before the American Consul. The captain and tho mate, mutually recriminated, are blaming each other for the state of affairs.
Ghbistchurch, this day. The St. Alban's Licensing Committee resolved to close all the hotels in their district, which is close to the city. At 10 p.m. yesterday the weather was exceptionally severe, and the Port Hills were capped with snow, Duskdik, this day. The weather is boisterous.
The Harbor Board's big dredge camo into collision with* the barque Othello, with the result that the latter sustained serious damage.
