The Council last night agreed to send a cable message congratulating Queen Victoria on attaining the jubilee of her reign. Councillor Goldie protested against the cost £2B. Hawea, June 4. A shocking fatality occurred hero this morning by which Joseph McWilhams aged 22 years lost his life. Deceased, who is a brother-in-law of A, A, Fantham had been sinking a well on the farm of the latter and this morning he was lowered without being tied. Ho let go his hold before reaching the bottom having been over overpowered by gas, Strenuous efforts have. been been made for several hours to reach the body, but they are of no avail. There is a seam of lignite at the bottom whioh is 80 feet deep, There have been no previous indications of any danger.
Auckland, this day. _ Captain Webb, American Consul, lias investigated tho charges brought against the Captain and mate of the American whaler by some of the seamen, and come to the conclusion the charges were exaggerated.
