PARLIAMENTARY
(United Press Association.) HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.30. Replying to questions it was stated that plans for the Manawatu Gorge line would be ready in a week or two, when tenders would bo called; that the question of tho amendment of tho Bankruptcy Act during the session was under consideration. On tho motion for going into Cominitteeof Supply, Major Atkinson saidafter tho vote taken yesterday, the Opposition would not attempt any factious oppositions, but they threw the responsibility of making reductions on the Government. The House went into Committee of Supply for the consideration of the estimates. The vote of £7710, general post office, was carried. The Chief offices and sub-offices, £123,353. Mr Hatch suggested that the classification system should be adopted in this Department. Sir Julius Vogel said ho proposed to go into classification question during tho recess to see if it could bo adopted with advantage, he was avorable to the system, Mr Duncan moved that the vote be reduced by £llOO. He contended that the chief .Postmaster at Tiniaru should not receive a larger salary than that officer at Oamaru. Sir Julius Vogel said business at Timaru was a third larger than at Oamaru, be sides the Timaru Post Master was an older officer in the service, A long discussion ensued, and the amendment was lost, and the vote passed as printed, Maintenance, repairs etc., £40,246 was carried. Telegraph cable subsidies £350 was carried, Conveyance of rails by sea £72,877. Sir Julius Vogel stated that the total amount paid for the direct service last year was £20,000 the bonuses being £7,000 or £B,ooo.—Carried, Conveyance of inland mails £2B,lßo.—Carried. Cartiage of mails by railway £I,OOO. — Carried. Progress was reported, and the House went into Committee on the Native Equitable Owners Bill which passed with, verbal amendments. The Municipal Corporation's Bill was further considered in Committee, The House rose at 5.30. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Mr Menzies gave notice of motion that power be given to read the Bible in school-hours, Mr Buckley announced that Mr Reynolds had been sworn in as a member of the Government. < The Charitable Aid Extension Bill was debated on the second reading, and some opposition shown by Mr Holmes and Mr Pollen. The debate was adjourned and the Council rose.
