WASTE LANDS BOARD EXPENSES.
(To theJditob.) Sir,—l wish to slafe in reply to'your leader of the 31st Jv% re expenses of Waste Land Bards, Vou go .on t6 show that tho present Ixoverhroent aro incurring increased expense in tha v administration of Waste Land Boards. 'You .point out my appointment as an instant Now my appointment was by Mr Rolleßton as an appointment he P'P" / tnited should bo inadohad ho refflaiilM in office. It will lie Been from the afe'Ve 1 that whether my appointment was a wse one or not, the present Government hsl very little to do in the matter. I think! yon will find, by referring to your files, that you fully approved of my .appointment when it was made. You would like to make the public believe that, as you have put it, "1 have struck oil," I should like to put another tide of the question before your readers. I have to leave my home on Tuesday, at. 6 a.m M returning on Friday at 9 p.m. t Have travel about 240 miles by railway and coach. Tho cost of railway and coach f3 per meeting, total for 87 meetingßn £ll11 'bus £llßs Gd ;'niealsand beids 10ml per day for 148 days i)? 4; total £1861& fid. After paying the above I have 18s 2d left over for incidental expenstrt'o cover 148 days travelling and attending th» Boards meetings, or a fraction under 2i 2d (two shillings and twopence) per. day, 1 confess at once that I have not been able toipay my expenses out of my allow- tt ance. .Up to about the end of the yesfl r received just the same allowance for ray • four days as the Wellington members received for one day's attendance, or rather for three hour's attendance. 1 attended 30 meetings of the Boatd at a loss of £1 per meeting, besides tho loss of 120 working days, Shortly after my appointment I moved that the Board should meet one# a month instead of fortnightly.. My motion did find a seconder. Mesui* Beetham and others" moved that the Government be requested; to make a , special allowance for my attendance, ; owing to the fact that 1 had to lose four s days per meeting. 1 havo been receiving an extra allowance since November last (I think). I am now about £3O out of pocket, and I intend to draw my full allowance until I havo repaid myself. After thut I do not intend to usea shilling more than my expenses amount to; th» balance will be handed over to such charities as I may deem right. I leave your readers to judge whether I M 1 making money out of my appointment® not. I will further ask them to iudg# whethor the present Board; the expenses shown by your leader, is not much better in the interests of settlement tlwn in the good old times when all th» ■. members resided in Wellington. itii V quite clear to any man with a grain of common sense that tho most useful men. on our Land Boards a p e those residing in' the country districts. Is it fair or reasonable to ask any man to lose both time and money in working for the general public. lam, etc,, W, W. McCardib. THE BENEVOLENT SOCIETY. [To the Editor.] Sir,—l was called upon yesterday for a a subscription to a case of distress by a person who represented that the canvass was being made by direction of the Secrerotary of the Benevolent Society, andthat unless such a canvass were made tlfljk 1 local Society could not assist the cas|r As a direct subscriber to the Society, I object to side appeals of this character. . Yours, etc., Subscribes, (To the Editor.) Sir,—Complaints are continually being made regarding the nuisance of stray horses and horned cattle which are turned out on both Railway road and Bush road, to tho annoyance of a number of settlers thore. I would advocate that our Inspector of Nuisances should visit these: parti and put a stop to such proceedings, , which have been going on now for Beverjil months. It is not an uncommon thing to see twenty horses, beside horned cattl», grazing on these.roads nearly everyday,, breaking down fences and getting on to private property. I would propose that our Inspector of Nuisances make MlighJ deviation in his rounds and visit Mr Donald's new road, and thence dowa-Chamberlain-street on to the Uppor Plain, road, I am quite sure it would be i great boon to the Borough foes, ■; which. are rather low just now. • I jkp lam, Ac., Br A SCfJBRERiv ,
