We regret to record the death of one,, who, though not long a resident of Mas- i tenon, lias, during his short stay ihere, : gained many friends. Mr Johnßanaome came into Masterton'some twolve months" since, with his wife and family, and started ir. business. He was a steady, persevering, and strictly temperate man, and he was jußt begining to get over his preliminary expenses when hefluccumbed to an attack of typhoid,' which, in in a few short weeks, put an end to his promising'career, and left an ailing wife and two infant children to face the world, Deceased some time since tried to join the Ruchabites, but the doctor refuaed to pass his wife as sound, and, consequently, through no fault.of his own, the benefit that would have accrued therefrom at this Bad time, is lost to his widow. We understand some friends are willing to lend a helping hand towards defraying the expenses of the funeral which takes place this afternoon. Elective Justices of the Peace, eh? Sir George Grpy is scoring heavily this session ! The Government' played right into his Ihbulb there! They made such a lot of J.P.'b, and Buch'j,;uiicqmmon queer ones, that the house were ready to jump at any system as a relief from noininaation! But the ministers agreed with Sir beorge, and voted with him ! Some did and some didn't! Played their cards very badly it seems to me I They'll get the blame from those who don't approve of an elective ' Magistracy,- while Sir George Grey will get all the credit from those' wht'i dol Oh yes, the old gentleman knows his way about 1 He's been there before I He carried his New Hebrides resolution too, dead in the teeth of both Stout arid Vogel? In the Select Committee, ho did, but 1 fancy they'll put their foot down in the House ! By Jove, I believe he'll carry it there too ! If he does, 1 it will-be a nasty jar for the . ministers and thoy not to stand it 1 How do you think .Sir George's plan of an international Commission would work! It ought to work very well, but it wotdd probably have the effect of retarding the eivilation of tho Islands for many years 1 You moan it would delay the exfceriniiyiflion of tho natives ? Well that's another way of putting it I You do not appear to have any very powerful sentimental affection for savago races! I don't hanker after 'em much!— Press Puffs. Messrs L. J.
