CORRESPONDENCE.

. [To thb Editor,] Sir,-In the report of the proceedings of the Borough Council, published in the issue of your paper of the 19th May,' I see that Cr Perry stated that I was to havo furnished a report to the Council on the protection of the about Masterton. lam awaro tnmja resolution requesting my services in i\w /j matter was passed at a meeting of th»*if Borough Council which took place shortly ' after the heavy flood of September 2nd, two years ago. ->Tho Masterton Road Board (in whose service 1 was at the time) instructed mo to comply with the request of the Council. The report would hare been furnished in due course had not Mr William Lowes (then Mayor) requested me to witliold from any action until 1 heard further from the Boroueh authorities. The conclusion whicli I drew from the intimation was, that the Council had subsequently discovered that the.main body of the Waipoua waters had become diverted into the Waipipi stream on' tho Opaki, and that in consequents of thig diversion, the property of the Borough was no longer in danger. Whether or : not this was tho view taken by the Borough Councillors 1 am not in a position to say, but as I received no subaeqnent instructions' to proceed with tho report, I justly concluded that they did not desire it, With respect to flis Worship tho Mayor's statement, that I had told |him I had furnished the roport, there is clearly some misapprehension on his part, as the contrary was what I intended to convey when spejfeing hurriedly to him on the Bubject, jusfP I. was starting for the back country on Monday week last. I am, etc., • ' C.B, Bbemnee W f

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Your local contemporary in an acrimonious and ill-natured article strikes out right and left at the wicked, local bakers, he holds them up to public execration us corrupt and dishonest men, combined for the purpose of cheating the public with light weight and high prion. In good truth, however, all this is to be much regretted, and especially whon done in the flippant and somewhat coarse manner which has been adopted by 1 your contemporary, Whatever may have been his provocation, or whatever may be the sina of bakers generally, they hardly warrant such reckless and indiscriminate condemnation,, nor will it bo likely to gain him the esteem of those whose good opinion is worth having. In the article referred to I find asserted that thjjAtcal bakers have been supplying with light weight, flow, I want your readers to compare this with an extract from another article of your contemporary, "We believe the bakers of Masterton to be models of honesty, and that the bread descends in weight as it goes doimtheTalley," I am, <fcc, J. G. MiOKiY.
