MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Till regular fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held last, niijht. Present—The Mayor and Cm "Cullen, Muir, Heßsey, Mason, flapper, Chamberlain,. Williams and Perry. The minutes of the special and last ordinary meeting were read and confirmed, Correspondence outwards and inwards was read. The Poundkeeper's report was rend for the month showing a slight deficiency. ran INSPECTOR. The resignation of Mr J. Muir as Fire Inspector was handed in, Cr Muir said he handed in his resignation as Fire Inspector, as he was not satisfied with" the manner in which tho Council had treated theVolunteorßrigade. Cr Chamberlain moved that it be accepted. Cr Peny seconded, and said he did not see how Cr Muir c mid do otherwise.— The motion was carried. BOROUGH BRIOADE, Mr Thos. Barker wrote, accepting the office of captain to the Borough Fire Brigade, and sending the following list of officers and men appointed by him : Captain, Thos. Barker; Lieutenant, D. Pickering; Foreman, H. Broom; Brinchmen, W. Whitt and Creelman; Firemen —Messrs Baumber, Ross, Smith, (Jheck, Jackson, Nicholls, Darvill, Hill, Broach, Nee, Foster, Tait, Thomas, and Marsh; Engine-keeper, M, Hoar; Secretary, R, J.Fitton. • Messrs Murray, Roberts & Co. telegraped in reply to tho Town Clerk, Btating that-they woufcf* Rgrco to tho Borough Council taking over the manual engine, and further adding that .Mr E. Pearco had boen written to by the old Brig&do for the other manual engine, and he had declined to give a reply at present, As a deputation was about to wait on the Council the consideration of tho matter Was allowed to stand over.
COEBESPONDENCE. . • . The Secretary of the North Wairarapa' Benevolent Society wrote, asking that the Council pay the sum of £25 to the Society as agreed. It was further stated that the Council would be entitled to elect a Trustee. It was resolved to pay the amount, and let the appointment stand over to the next meeting. Mr G. M. Wood wrote asking the Council to widon the culvert on hjs road to admit the night cart, It was proposed that the matter be referred to the Works Committee with power to act, Or Gappor pointed out that the road was not the property of the corporation. Ho moved as an amendment that the Council authorise the expenditure of a sum not exceeding £7 10s for a ihed to cover the cart and maie approaches. Ho pointed out that the expenditure would boillugalif made-on a road not owned by tho Borough, Cr Cullen seconded. '. Cr Williams said if the man's contract expired they would have to build another probably in some other place. The Mayor thought the shed micht be erected at the old gravel pit, and theu it would be on the corporation land, ' . Cr Gapper withdrew his ammdmont, and the original motion was put and carried, .GAS PUNT FREIGHT.
The Mayor reported that he had waited on the Manager .if Railways and the General Manager and that he had been successful in getting a reduction in railway freight from 28a lid to 22s 6dper ton on the gas plant, He moved that a vote of thanks bo accorded Mr R, K, Smith their Gas engineer for drawing the attention of the Council to the matter —Carried,
'. DEPUTATION. Messrs Easthope aud Manaell, on behalf of tho Volunteer Fire Brigade then waited on the Council, and by permission addressed the Mayor, He oiplained that he had boen deputed by 17 Volunteer firemen to oifer their services to the Council upon certain conditions, which he explained. The Mayor promised to consider the offer, and the deputation thanked the Council and withdrew. The reports of the Library Committee, Gas Committee, and the finance wire read and adopted without comment. GAS PLANT. *
The Mayor said some 200-tona of gas plant was expected shortly and he thought it would be desirable to call for tenders for the cartage. He would move, That tenders be called for carting plant from the Railway Station to the gas-making site, Cr Gapper seconded the motion which wus carried, The Mayor said gas meters to the value of £3OO were at tho Railway Station, and they would require to bo stored for t#o or throe* months. It would also bo dcsirablo to insure them for their value for that period. Cr Gapper offered the use of a shed to store the metors, ' ■' . The offer was accepted with thanks, and the, Town Clerk instructed to effect an insurance to the value of the moteri.

Had anything been done ?' Or Perry said Mr Bremner was to hare sent in a report. Ha had not done so.' The Mayor said Mr Bremner told him he had, The Clerk said no report had beon vent in. Cr Williams moved that Mr R. K. Smith be asked to report upon the best means of protecting the river banks, Ho was an authority on river vorks. Cr' Cullen moved that Cw Gapper, Heron, Perry. Hessey, and the Mayor be appointed a Committee to report on the question, with power to expend any sum up to, lay £8 in tho meantime, whore the necessity waß urgent. Cr Hessey seconded, Cr Gapper objected, It was a, question of vital importance to the town. If another fresh came the river would break through into Villa Street, and empty itself into the oreek near Mr Hoar's place, and then the Town would seriously suffer. Cr Muir moved as an amendment that a professional engineer be ongaced to ' report upon the best method of protecting tho Waipoua River banks. Tho Mayor thought the best thing to do was to ask the Government to glvo them the services of Mr Blaokefct. The amendment was carried with the addition moved by the Mayor, That the I County Council and the Government bo asked to Bond an Engineer to report in conjunction with the Borough Engineer. mi INSPECTOR. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Cullen, Captain Thos, Barker, of tho Fire Brigade was elected Firo Inspector to the Borough. THE VOHJKTBBR Plftß BMOADI.
