Received May 14, 7 p.m. -The team of cricketers sent to England by the Melbourne Cricket Club, commenced tho season to-day at Sheffield Park, Sussex,, by a match against a represeutativeteam chosen by Lord Sheffield. The match created great interest, and there was. a very large attendance on the ground, including a number of visitors from London. Weather was unfavorable, and play was interfered by the heavy rains which fell at intervals during the day, mid the wicket from this cause was somewhat heavy. The members of the Australian team were entertained at luncheon by Lord Sheffield. The following composed the Homo team ;—W. G, Grace. Captain (Gloucestershire), W, Newhatn, (rfussex), W. M. Read (Surrey), W. Karnes (Notts), W. Bates (York), W. Flowers (Notts), fl. Phillips (Sussex), W. Scottou (Notts), A. Sliuw (Notts), A, Shrewsbury (Notts), G. Ulyett (Vork). The visitors won the toss,and the Australian captain elected to send his men first to the wickets, Jonea and Bruce being deputed to commence the proceedings. The latter, however, had only made two when he was bawled, and Scott joined Jones. Scott began to make- some play, but Jones, after being credited with eight, returned the ball into the bowler's hands, and had to retire in favor of Giffen. Jarvis was next, but was also iun out ofter making two. Garratt theu joined Blackburn, who soon afterwards was caught, having contributed 13 to the score. JSpottbrtn coming last, carried out his bat for four, his partner Garrett being caught for nine, all wickets being down for 98, The Home team were in good form, their howling being very uecuruto, while the their fielding being excellent particularly in the matter of catches.
