The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, MAY 11, 1886. THE SESSION OF 1886.

.'Phr. session, of 1886 commences this week, and,. considering its nearness, there, is. a wonderful stillness in the political atmosphere. Nothing to ripple the surface excepting perhaps another batch of Justices of the Peace out of -the Ministerial oven, but then wo are as accustomed to an occasional deluge of J.P.'b as some lnimid . localities are to a shower of frogs, and we cease to regaid it as .phenomenal, : No : one ventures to inquire what .Ministers will dp in the coining session, and it is, perhaps, taken for granted that Ministers flo not know tliemsplvea. The Ministerial crew is a peculiar combination, consistirg of two captains, two able seamen, and three or four apprentices, and as yet we .'do not know which captain is to sail the ship during tie coming session. It is supposed that Mr Stout intends to be skipper, but then everybody knows that,if Sir Juliiis is not willing it will be no use for him to -attempt to wield the speaking trumpet. In any case the Ministry will ba weak, but the Ilouso rather likes a soft yielding "give 'me what I wantand then I will vote for you" kind of Ministry. A virtuous," high toned Premier is never as popular as one with whom little points can be worked. For this reason there are many members who would sooner seeMr Stout than Major Atkinson in power, not that the former in doficient in moral principle, but that he. is more easily persuaded, he is, in a word, " malleable," Of course, on its demerits the present coalition Ministry ought to be turned out, but it is lesi likely to be judged by considerations of past misdeeds thau by a calculation ,of favors to come. Perhaps the strongest party, numerically, in the House is the moderate party, and if the Ministers trim their sails to suit this section they will have little difficulty in going through the session with a working majority.
