Sir,—As an old footballer I was greatly surprised and disgusted on Saturday last at therecent innovations made ii the rules of tho game,, more especially as regards umpires and referee. By what I could see the umpires are really nonentities in the match, unless they are of the same opinion. The referee, should he bo favorable to a team, has only to shut hii eyes to their shortcomings,■ and the iriatoh goes by favor. 1 am not going to say such was the case on Saturday, but more : than once the Masterton stick-was raised without the whistle lespondihg, and .when the last try was disputed, the referee, without being appealed to, said-" that although! he had not seen the play referred' should bo compelled to (rive if in .SflTof Greytown." ' I trust the footballers will see: it to their interest to net these obnoxious rules amended, or we shall have;, to bid. goodbye to football as it should be played, especially as regards -the "play of Ruobt,

(To the Editor.) Sir.—Many of our Wairarapa friends, when visiting Wellington with the intention of purchasing at.Te. Aro House here, have been puzzled by the close proximity of another draper's shop, to know which waa which. To prevent mistakes wo have had tho words "Te Aro House*, painted in black letters on white, ground on each of our door-steps, If they will only look for these, error's and loss may be prevented.
