MASTERTOJN ROAD BOARD.

The annual meeting of the Board was held at noon- ydaterday. PresentMessrs W. H. Beetham, R. D. "Dagg, A. Johnston, R. R, Welch, and W. B. Buick.

Mr W. H. Beetham ,was appointed Chairman, Mr R, D. Dags Treasurer, Mr R. WUsone Clerk, and Mr M. McKenzie as Overseer.

It was resolved on the motion of Mr Dag? that Mr Crawford be paid an extra shilling a day for supervising work. The Clerk was authorised to get assist-, anceto enable him to arrange accqunts between the old and new Boards,

Mr. W. Bectham in reference to the works near the Taueru for which he had provided horses and carts. Messrs' Wardell wrote calling attention to the necessity for doing someto the portion of the Te Whiti road passiug through the swamp on Mr K Cockbums property. • A petition was read from Mr' J.. Montgomery and fourteen others, asking that.the road to Upper Manaia. leading from: the main to the railway crossing and twenty, chains further on be formed and' metalled ; and from Mr Win. Falconer and nine others, asking that thirty chains through Mr R McKenzie's property at Fernridge be. levelled and gravelled. It was resolved to expend £4 on tho Te Whiti road, and to make some slight impropements to the Upper Plain to railway road; also to see what the Masterton. Borough Council are prepared to do with the Upper Manaia drains. ,

Mr Woodronfe, onbehalf to the ratepayers, trusted tho members of the Board would see their way to make this year's rate rb light as possible. He acknowledged that the Board had done a ureat deal of useful work,.and had expended their funds judiciously, but he pointed out that betweenJCounty rato and Property Tax the settlers, big and small alike, were asked to boar a very heavy strain. Tho Chairman replied that the sentiment expressed would have every attention and consideration from himself and colleagues.

Some t considerable discussion took place on the question of special rates, Eventually it was resolved that a rate of a half-penny in the £ bo struck on all rateable properly within the district. The meeting then adjourned.
