The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, APRIL 13,1886. THE WRECK OF THE TAIAROA.
of April, 1881, occurred '■the 'catastrophe; to the Tararua, by .which one hundred and twenty lives were ■ lost. Since that date, during a long interval of fivo years, we do not remember any tale of the sea which has excited as much public interest as did the Taiaroa incident of yesterday. Considering the traffic that daily and hourly passes round the rugged coast of New Zealand, it is almost a wonder that there should be such an immunity from perils by the sea. Apparently life is'as safe on coastal steamers as it is on railways, and though occasionally people may be agitated by a narrative like th» one published in our. columns yesterday, the rarity o! such a record i 3 calculated to fill the mind with thankfulness that the risk of a coastal voyage is reduced to a minimum by the skill find enterprise of those who conduct our marine traffic.
