Notice is given in another column that the Burgess list and the defaulter's list for the Borough of Masterton areopenfor inspection at the Town Clerk's office ■ during office hours until April 15th. All objections thereto must be lodged with the Town Clerk on or before that date. Wo have received from Mr George Watson, tho local agent for Sutton and Sons, Queen's seedsmen, their amateur guide .to Horticulture. The guide is replete with general information, and is m itself a work of art. Mr Watson holds the cable code of the above firm, so that communications from New Zealand- customers can be rapidly conveyed, It has been freely stated in Wellington that Mr Menteath, who is now living in Wellington, would not stand for his district, -Mangahua, again, and that Mr Wakefield would contest it in the Government interest. Mr Menteath, however, denies, through the papers, that he has any intentions at present of giving up Mangahua as stated. Mr S, Soil'e, the well-known mattress manufacturer of Manners Street, Wellington, has published a list of prices in our columns that should be of considerable advantage to anyone requiring mattresses, palliasses, bolsters, and pillows. Mr Soffo has also a stock of bedsteads, iron and wood, in groat variety " remarkably cheap for cash." Mr Robert Carrick, who, for many years was connected with the press of Masterton, and more recently shorthand reporter for the Press Association, has joined the proprietary'of tho Thames Advertiser filling, besides, the post of editor to that paper, Mr Carrick is a journalist- of many years experience, and in him the Advertiser has gained a valuable acquisition. Messrs Lowes & lorns add to their stock sale at their Masterton yards on Wednesday next, one brake and one spring cart and harness. Also sixteen steers and speyed heifers. At the same sale they will offer in the estate of tho late Mr J. H. Corbott, one bay gelding, and the well-known piebald golding "Bob," together with a lot of brake and trap harness, -On Saturday next April 10th, they will offer for sale the interest of the lessee (Mr W. Rapp) in the unexpired lease of two cottages in Hope-street. The annual rental is £5, and the lease has nine years to run, Truth calls attention to a striking oxample of the costs to an individual prosecuting for a criminal offence, A clerk at Messrs Martin & Co., bankers, forged the name of Mr Frederick Cooper, one of the customers of the Bank, and in this way obtained £BSO, Tho man was arrested, and found guilty on trial, Only £l6 was found on his person, which was handed over to Messrs Martin in part restitution. The costs of the prosecution were £(i39 lis Bdd, which had to be paid by the prosecutors, less £lO 15s county allowance. All this is very encouraging for people who have been robbed. The Salvation band yesterday was the cause of a triple disaster, viz., a bolting horse,,milkless families, and profuse profanity, It appears that a milk cart was standing in Bannister-street in the morning, the driver being engaged in delivering milk, when the band, flags, and processionists came in sight and hearing, The animal gave a snort, shook itself free from the blinkers, and started off on its own accord in an opposite direction to the cause. Turning into Hessey-street the horse and trap joined two more horses, and tho way in which the palings flew from tho fences was quite sufficient to gladden the hearts of the local paling splitters, After emptying the contents of the milk cans, and causing anything but Sunday words to be siad by the crowd that assisted in catching the runaway, the animal was brought to a standstill against a post, the milkman leaving the rest of his round to finish off this morning. Between one and two o'clock on Sunday a resident in Dixon-Straet heard a man perambulating up and down the verandah of their house, and trying tho door and windows, as the individual shewed no signs of going away, the inmates consisting of afoniale and three children became much alarmed and endeavored to attract the attention of the neighbors from tho back of the house, Hearing the back door-being opened, the man left the front and went to the back, only to find it had been fastoned again, he then tried the windows, and finding one unfastened got through, the female making her. escape through the front door to one of tho neighbouring houses, Having succeeded in rousing some of the neighbours thev went back to the place and found a young inan about twenty years of age, slightly the worse for liquor, and without a hat, he was very profuse in. apologies, stating that he had mistaken the house, and if they would allow him to depart he would return in the morning to renew the apologising, at which art he appeared an adept, He was allowed a free pass, and after enquiring tho direction of the Club Hotel showed the neighborhood his heels, and up to the present has not kept his promise of returning, much to the joy of the unprotected household. Coughs, Colds, Bronchitis, etc., are quickly cured by using Baxter's celebrated "Lung Preserver."
